Old member, new car (to me) in Springfield, MO
I have wanted an LS1 car forever and finally bit the bullet. Traded my 99 rcsb gmc for a 98 trans am. Lowered, z06 wheels, tons of aftermarket suspension goodies, 6 speed, ls6, decent cam, long tubes, ORY, all the good stuff. Got it late saturday and Sunday morning went for a drive, hit second and about 5 grand... BOOM. Threw a rod. Yay me, what luck. So, engine swap time, i guess I will throw a 5.3 in it with the cam and valvesprings to get me going for a while. Oh, and to top it off it wasn't an ls6, it's an ls1. Guess that doesn't matter now anyway.

Thanks. An lq9 would be great but everywhere I have looked people are really proud of them, i can pick up a 5.3 for $500. Would it be possible to get an lq9 for under $1000?

oh ya a used one goes for around 600-800 and if you want to put in the wrench time you could have a bad *** 6.0L in that thing. if i remember right a buddy of mine picked one up and had a shop rebuild it and he spent a total of like $1200, but that's cuz he did not put in the wrench time himself.

Well that's what i will do for sure, last time i looked they were going for quite a bit more than that, but it was a couple years ago. Is that the junk yard prices or somewhere else?

junkyard, most people try to sell them for 2K+ but I have seen junkyard motors in better condition then what some people try to sell. Besides I would rebuild it(new gaskets, rings, bearings; if needed, and lube everything up that needs to be) regardless so you will basically have a new engine anyway. some things to consider is you will need a fbody oil pan and a ls6 style intake manifold and just about everything ls1/6 is compatible with the lq9.

Yeah, I have all the stuff off the blown ls1 so that part is taken care of. Only thing is I don't know where the rod came out. Hopefully the block so I won't have to buy a new oil pan, haha.
