Unhappy HUD Went Out Today

Well, I think my HUD went out today. Worked fine this morning. Get in the car when I am leaving work and no HUD. No blown fuses. And I am out of warantee. Figures.

That sucks, its one of the best features on this car. Do a junkyard parts search, you may find one cheap before you hit the dealer. Could it be a bulb?

This happend to me about a year ago. Turned out it was just a spring that had broke inside the unit. Look into the unit from the outside of the car on the driver side of the unit there should be a spring that you can see, you will be able to see if it is in place or if the place it hooks is broke.

Did you ever get this fixed? Mine pulled the same stunt today. No blown fuses on my end either.
Storm, how difficult is this to repair?

Thanks,
BJ

There is a photocell in it that can come loose and it will not display at all or be very dim. If the spring is not broke then I'd guess it is the photocell. If it is the photocell, just solder it and it should work ok again. The HUD does need to come out of the dash to solder the photocell. Good luck with it.

That is exactly right! The dash comes apart pretty easy in the W bodies though.

I think you would need to replace the windshield in order to see it. Some company makes after market type ones.

If you don't replace the windshield it is just a little blury. You can still see it very clear. I have an aftermarket windshield in my GTP that is not HUD approved but the car has the HUD in it. It was replaced because of a rock that cracked it.

I looked and the spring is just laying there. So I have to pull the whole HUD to get it. Yeck! That looks a bit intimidating.

Well I think it would be a pain. I didnt fix mine cause it broke at 5K so the dealer just replaced the whole unit. I guess you could say that I lucked out when it broke.

Well, I check my hud today. Sure enough the spring is loose and the hook that held it broke. I am sure I can figure out how to take apart my dash. How do I repair the hook?
