My 2006 Impala SS with only 52,000km serpentine belt started to chrip about two weeks ago only at cold start up then eventually it would chirp all the time. I investigated the noise and noticed a wobble in the crankshaft pulley. I took it to the dealer they stated on the work order: Noticed a slight movement on Balancer(crankshaft pulley). Check bolt for tightness. OK. Add belt dressing, noise gone. Will need balancer(pulley), bolt and belt. Total cost of job $1800 CDN plus tax. Requires removal of engine cradle to drop engine to reach the crankshaft pulley. My worry is if I don't replace this will my crank journals and or seals wearout due to excess vibration from lack of balance on the the crankshaft due to the wobble and cause other engine issues or engine failure down the road.
Anyone have any experience with this issue or an opinion on what I should do?

Askthem about the 5 year 100,000 miles power train warranty....that is supposed to cover drive train and engine issues for 5 years or 100,000 miles which ever comes first, unless the don't offer that up North.

I bought it brand new December 2006 and GM did not bring in the 5 year/160,000km warranty until September 2007 in Canada for the 2007 model year. It is out of warrenty and I did not buy an extended warranty but thanks for your suggestions.
What I really would like to know is if anyone else has experienced this issue with an LS4. Would I be right in saying if I do not repair it down the road I could have premature crankshaft journal wear / leaky main seals or other engine damage because of the crank balance maybe off. Should I leave this and take my chances and do not repair it or bite the bullitt repair it if I want to keep this car for a number of years.

Its always been the bolt on my car that backed off some and let the pulley slide out and would chirp, dumb *** me never replaced it (torque to yield, one time use) when i had it off from the cam dealy and just kept tightening it everytime it squeaked. Replaced the bolt and REALLY tightened it ona lift, 0 problem since. That chirping only came from the poor belt alignment and it side loading the edge of the belt more on the edges of the pulleys.

OK... now I understand.
Get your manual from your glove box and read page 7-2
If your dealer does not want to help you on a Goodwill Basis, Call the 1-800 # on that page and explain the situation. This repair is not considered normal, they may assist you, but you have to ask and that does not cost anything.
