Default Hot air intake

Need your help guys please. Well I bought a custom cai with a K&N air filter. I took my car yesterday to get it tuned (hp tuner) by a local tuner , when tunning he saw that my air intake temp was very hot. I told him I had put a custom cai ,when he saw it he said that was the problem and suggest to wrap the exhaust. My question is if the K&N air filter is to close to the engine since I put it rigtht after the maf instead of putting a piece of piping (5 in ) after the maf then the K&N air filter or do I just wrap the exhaust ?If so what type of exhaust wrap? I heard of DEI.Thanks in advance.

wrap your crossover pipe with DEI's header wrap....it will help keep the temps down a lil since it is right below the TB and intake.

Thanks DP I already ordered it along with some silcone spray. Do you think I need to add the piece of piping after the maf?

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but without some sort of shield surrounding the air filter the temps are still going to be high. You are alomst better with the stock box and a K&N drop in panel filter. It couldn't hurt by putting the filter and maf closer to the headlight, it will draw in colder air there.

Yea fab up a heat shield similar to the k&n setup. Paint it and use some weather striping or something to seal it from the hot engine bay. Maybe cover that with some reflective heat stuff.

I had a feelling that would be the case . Well first I'm going to move the filter closer to the headlight then find some type of shield to put around it to reduce the amount of heat to the air filter. Thanks again guys for all your help.

this is what I went with to lower that god awful heat! I strolled over to Lowes, purchased some heat shield (that I STILL have a lot of, I think ) I applied to both sides of the heat shield and,...well here's a pic:
works well!!

I was going to build a similar one for my car. The metal intake pipe above the crossover just didn't appeal to me though. I would look for plastic piping if I were you.

This is what you need if you want a real CAI. You need to completely seal the hot under hood air out. I made this CAI box myself from some aluminum, rivets, lexan, and heat barrier. It is lined inside with the barrier, 2 layers. You can buy an air box like this commercially, but it cost me way less to make my own. The exhaust crossover is wrapped also. I had the maf and silicone elbow wrapped with heat barrier too, but removed it when I put in my home made 1.5" TB spacer. I am going to re-wrap that when I get time.

Looks good. Have you measured IAT's? I am sure the temps dropped when compared to stock.

I have not measured IATs, ( I have no way to do this) but I have relocated the IAS to the front of the cone filter in the aluminum box. Its a K&N filter with the rubber front. I drilled a 1/2" hole in the rubber front and put the IAS there. You tell by SOP that the engine does not lose power when it warms up like it did before IAS relocation.

Looks good man. When you wrapped your crossover did you remove the heat shield or did you wrap over it?

I ran the kind of same setup as the original poster and it seemed like my car was hotter. It's right there on top of the engine, my temp gauge was always 1/2 way up. Just put a drop in K&N Panel filter and it really seems like a better option(other than buying a CAI kit with heatshield).

So the consensus pretty much is : Get the K&N CAI kit with the heat shield, use a drop in, or make you own but use some heatshield to keep the temps down, otherwise seems like you're just gonna rob power from yourself.

Thanks Chris well since I already made the expense in buying this custom cai I think Im going to make my own and put some heatshield.
