Default resonator???

Hi everyone,
I just ordered the magnaflow exhaust for my impala, and i was wondering; what does the resonator do in our exhuast? The reason i ask is i was thinking about eliminating it when i put my new exhuast on my car.
thanks everyone

It is just used to muffle the exhaust tone. It all depends how loud you like the exhaust.

So really its just another muffler in the exhuast system?

Kind of, but not nearly as restrictive as a muffler. Usually it consists of a straight tube with little holes in it with fiberglass packing around it then encased by a larger tube. I just have the factory exhaust with no resonator and it sounds great!

I just had my exhaust done (see this thread), and I was unsure about removing the resonator. When I first drove the car, it was pretty loud and I thought I might have to get the resonator put back on. After driving it for a week though, I have gotten used to it and I really like the sound. My wife hates it though, but that's okay, now I'll save mileage and gas by taking all the family trips in her Saturn Vue.

I think the exhaust system sounds 100% better without the resonator.

Default what size?

Hi, so i can start planning ahead to eliminate the resonator on my magnaflow exhuast, what size is the resonator in the magnaflow kit? 2.5 inches? 3 inches?
While i'm on the topic of size, what are all the size differences between the stock exhuast and the magnaflow exhuast?

The stock is 2.5" to the Y, then 2" to the mufflers. The Magnaflow is 2.5" all the way. If you're going to eliminate the resonator, you shouldn't bother getting the Magnaflow system. You'll just be throwing away money. You'll have to find a shop that deals w/stainless, not all do (unless you weld yourself) and probably pay more to have them do the res delete w/the install than you would to just have them install it.

For less than the cost of the Magnaflow system (w/o install), I got 2 mufflers (ss Flowmasters), 2 tips that I actually like (most people don't like the ones w/the Magnaflow system, you may?), a custom job w/res delete, and in my opinion, a better sounding system.

Anyway, just giving you my $.02 .

The custom job is the way to go IMHO.....but mine's 3" instead of 2.5. Lots of true Chevy rumble, but music to my ears. Why buy an IMP/MC SS then ?

Yeah, mine is 3" to 2.5" at the Y, and I am so glad I went w/the custom system, b/c I was seriously considering getting the Magnaflow, even had my cc out at one time, about to order it .

Very easy job. Most, if not all, muffler shops can do it. Probably $50???

Yeah - but be aware that most shops don't have S/S pipe laying around. They might put regular piping in, which only lasts a couple of years.

Every time I needed a length of S/S pipe, I had to buy a 10' section.

They quoted me for S/S pipe for the car, not in sections....IIRC I spent $250 on the S/S Piping.

what is s/s piping? and why is it better than the "regular" piping?

Yeah - exhaust systems hold water (part of the combustion process) inside of them as they cool down, which sits inside till the next time you fire up, then it gets superheated. Repeat process. Rust starts inside.

Had my '85 MCSS in storage in the early 90's. Fired it up one spring day to bring it out, did the 'ole rev-er-up in the garage, blew the bottom out of both stock mufflers!
