Oil Change

Ma daddy always says:
"It's been sittin' in the ground for millions of years and they (dealers) tell me it's gotta go in three months????"
Actually, he DOES say that... He always jokes with my uncle, a GM tech, about the dealers & oil change places knowing more about maintenance of engines than the engineers that developed them. The engineers developed the OLM for a reason, didn't they?
In fact, while it was on the lift at the dealer for the rack, i had them swap my oil with Mobil1 & M1 filter that i provided...just b/c it was already up there and it's damn cold out. They put a sticker on my windshield stating it was due again in April and/or 3000mi from now (although they DID know to reset the OLM in the DIC)
I don't have your answer, though. I've never had a garage queen, so i wouldn't know what to tell ya.

If you have the tools to do it yourself, change it out every 3 months. the 20-30 mins it would take to do this will help the longavity of the valve train. I know that you are not driving it that much, but even with oil just sitting in there, it will start to weeken from not being used or cycled through the system.

I feel you Mel, I've got 941 on my 9 month old SS. I hardly drive mine, but when I do, it feels so good I might go in for an oil change within the next couple weeks. I changed my oil at about 600 miles, and that new oil's been in for about 5 months.
BTW: I thought that it was better to swithch to synthetic after 3,000 miles? So the motor is properly broken in....?

My Z gets driven on average 1700 miles / year.
I use 10W30 Valvoline full synthetic, and the $7 NAPA filter, forget the name right now. I change it once a year. The oil is so clean I used to pour it into my old beater.
I use 10W30 Valvoline semi-synthetic in the MCSS, the same NAPA filter, and use the OLM.

Add 8 hp and I could save $297 / year in gas mileage! I may try it.

They say your oil needs to be changed more often if you don't drive it for more then 30 minutes inbetween trips and/or if you let it sit for long periods due to water buildup not being able to evaperate from constant heat. I let my oil go 8,000 miles before i even think about changing it. I've seen test done on synthetic that show they don't even begin to break down until well after 5000 miles. I don't remember the website but they tested the oil mobile 1 synthetic oil over 25,000 miles and it didn't really begin to break down untill 20,000 or so with regular fill ups from burning oil , i'm sure the fillups helped its longevity but you get the picture.

If you really want to learn about how Oil is supposed to work... I highly recommend you read over a http://www.bobistheoilguy.com . Those people know more than nessesary about oil.
Also a note, our oil life monitors work on a formula driven by factors of how the engine has been used. If it sees that the oil isn't getting heated up or used in a more abusive way, it adjusts the life monitor accordingly. And the OLM is guaged to rate against Dino oil, not synthetic. Synthetic will actually last longer than what the OLM is rated for.
If you're serious about oil, read that website.

I get mine changed when the OLM is down to around 20% or about 5000 miles with how I drive with Mobil 1. Have had the car since the end of April and have a little under 11,000 miles on it. I know I could let it go past 5000 miles but I just get it done then anyways.
