2008 Buick LaCrosse Super
I've got a question about the review (the link below) on the new LaX Super:
http://www.forbesautos.com/news/auto...ick-super.html
Jeff Boike (GM Performance Division engineer) said they had to give up 3 HP in order to get the exhaust to sound more like a Buick (quieter). Anyway, my question is, could I gain that 3 HP back by installing a K&N air filter, or would replacing the stock mufflers with performance ones (Magnaflows) also work? Thanks.

Here's a link to a video about the car. You can hear its exhaust note at about the 1/2 way point:

You have a very, very nice armrest! (quote from the film) I have to laugh sometimes when I give a speech and I start to ramble ...
Congrats on the purchase! Car looks like a Jag S-Type.
That exhaust sounds just like the Chevy's stock system, yup - the K&N will help, but you won't notice 3hp. You need to jump 40+ to feel it in the SOP.
Not enough Buick guys on here, had a S/C'd '98 Regal GS with a pulley and exhaust change. Very nice car. Came with free AARP mailings!

So they are saying pretty much there wasnt one thing they could do to keep the extra 3hp, its like why even mention you had to cut it out? of all the technology available, the 3 hp really got them in development.

I'm a Buick guy, having owned a litany of models ranging from a '67 GS to a '96 LT-1 Roadmaster Limited (which I hopped up with 3.73 gears and other stuff; awesome sleeper) and a hopped up '99 Regal GS with a bunch of mods plus my Turbo Buicks....had the Lacrosse Super been available at the time I got the Impy I would have defintely gone that route-- the mods I've done to the Impy would be GREAT in the Super with its classier look and style. I can just imagine the Magnaflow system on it! When I go see clients in the SS they do doubletakes as it is, but a souped up Super...now that would be a real head-turner.

You'll have to scroll down to the Impala SS link to unleash the beast.

I have a 08 Super
I purchased a 08 LaCrosse Super in January. I got it for the LS4 and like the whole package. My opinion on the 3 HP is to leave it alone, don't mess with the exhaust.
If you go look at www.GMpowertrain.com you can see the torque & HP curves for teh LS4 in the Chevy, Pontiac, and Buick. All 3 models still have the same peak torque.
If you want a different sound from the exhaust then go for it, do not change the exhaust for a 3 HP difference.

The LaCrosse Super is really classy car! I've seen a couple for sale, and i'm really impressed! As for the exhaust, yeah i'd only change it for more sound like Martin said... Its not worth 3HP!
They're going to make a Lucerne Super as well i believe... Or they may already have one? I havent seen one yet!?
