Default "Crane 227" compare to the "Hot cam"

Hi All,
I love my 227 cam it has good power through out the power band quick responce and pulls great 2nd gear is awesome,, but sometimes I wonder how would have the hot cam compare to the 227 cam?

my first build I had the AI custom cam it had .218x.225 .544x.541 113 lsa

with my same set up it felt good but not great and what I mean by that was after I rebuilt my motor I kinda expected more power in fact I swear my stock cam had more low end and mid pull,
AI cam did have more power on top end but I kinda wanted more on the mid range.

but you know how when you have something thats really good but then you wonder what if I went bigger, don't get me wrong i'm not going to switch cams i'm am really happy with the 227 but just wonder performance wise whats the differance?
at one time I wondered about using the 305 comp. .220x.230 dur
but one thing you have to keep in mind that i'm in california and smog test & visual so LT were out of the question

I kinda thought that, maybe a few ponies on the top end but nothing that you would make a big differance

The gains would be so little going to a H/C. You would be better off having Lloyd Elliott custom grind you up something. Him and I took his version of the H/C and put it on Steroids for my custom grind Lopes really good.

Cam sizing will make a big difference up to a point, say going from stock to a cam in the 22x - 23x range makes a huge difference, then it falls from there, Now you need the heads that flow to compliment larger duration, Higher lift cams. I had a customer with a cam in the 228 range, he uped to a cam app with 10 degrees more, picked up only 8 more HP but the drive ability starting suffering.

It's my understanding that those who run the Crane227 tend to either make more power or be faster at the track than those with the HOT CAM.

The 227 was designed for the B-body cars to help them get off the line quicker being they are heavier. It makes peek power down low and through-out the entire mid range. It held "the cam only record" at one time in the 1/4

i'm shifting aprox 5900-6100 i have not dyno so i coudn't tell you where is the peak power but i can tell you this cam is fun and if I was to put some big slicks on it wow it would pull hard off the line.
my tires are getting old and loosing there bite but thats why I say 2nd gear it pulls hard is because 1st gear you break the tire's loose easy.

this is my DD and I put on 50 miles each day min and this cam is all around great cam for that it has great driveabilty and still have good power.

I trapped 115mph in a full weight car with the 227 cam FWIW. Heads were mildly ported at the time.

this is the cam that I want to go with when I can, it's pretty much the perfect street car cam, lots of usable power in the lower and mid range, and good drivability. I've als heard that the 227 does really well with a set of worked over heads, in fact I remember reading on here that a guy like his car better with the 227 than the 847 and he hard ported heads.

Lol...well the 227 and 847 are on two different ends of the spectrum. If he uses it as a DD then yeah he would more then likely enjoy the 227 better. The 227 with some decently ported heads with the supporting mods should put a M6 in the 360-375 range. 10-15 less with a A4

It all depends on the other supporting mods and the overall health of the motor. I have read many posts though of people shifting about 6400rpm, but your results may vary.

sounds good, 56k miles, heads been ported and polished, intake matched, headers, p600b with 5lbs, an tuned, the guy im getting the car from said they shut it down at 5000 rpm on the dyno and it made like 470 rwhp. so turning it 6400 should go almost 500. ?
