Pick up a used 3.23 or 3.42 rear end. Wait till it breaks then buy 12 bolt.

Got quoted about $850 for ring and pinion install (2.73 to 3.73), that includes all parts, labor, fluid.
That is a good chunk towards a 12-bolt. The car wouldnt see the strip that much though so it wouldnt be like its getting beat on a few times outta the week, every week. My question is should I fork out the money into a stock rear? Or save the money and put it towards a 12 bolt? Third option is listed in poll.

You think so? 2 places ive talked to said around 500 for labor alone. I have no clue when it comes to rears, if it was a simple pull out push in deal Id be all over it but I know thats not even close to what you do haha.

Your trips to the track - will they be on drag radials or street tires? If you're going to constantly be pulling low 60's with drag radials, save and go with the 12/S60/9". Buying another 10-bolt rear, IMO, isn't worth it. Even if you got them with 3.42s and later upgraded to 3.73s, thats additional cost to reprogram your PCM for the speedometer, twice (may not be an issue if you can do it yourself) on TOP of spending MORE money for a new 12/S60/9" later.
Be patient, and wait for the funds for the stronger rear. You'll thank yourself in the long run. I went through 4 or 5 10-bolts (I don't even remember how many I've broken) before I saw the light and went with a fully-built 9" and never looked back.

850$?! That guy is smoking crack. I got my 10 bolt rebuilt with new GM 4.10's, all bearings, fluids, 12 month/12,000 mile warranty, for 460$. I would save for the 12 bolt. I would have but mine was fried. It wasn't going to last any longer.

Haha I know a guy here in colo who runs a trans am with a blown lt1 383 stroker putting down 800rwhp, hes running the stock rear with stock gears and a gurdle. It makes noise at wot. haha im not sugesting this i just thought i would throw it in because it pretty funny.....and hes got a fully built moser 12 bolt sittin on the floor at his shot lol. If i wer u I would just get another stock unit, you could put it in yourself with no problem. unluss you set on 3.73's. In that case take the rear out yourself and have the parts bought and ready to be put in.

There's a guide on here in the drivetrain section on how to do the gear swap. I used that and Google to do mine the 1st time and did it for less than $200. I bought Summit gears and a basic rebuild kit with pinion n ring gear shims, plus 2 bottles of fluid, and still had a few bucks left. I put at least a good 100 qtr mile runs on it before pinion bearing gave way this past fall. Now I'm about to do it again but this time with some used GM 3.73s I got for $60 off another site. So with new pinion and carrier bearings I'm gonna be in under $125 on this setup.
But if I had the $$$ or wasn't married I would upgrade the rear to a S60, 12 bolt, or 9inch in a heart beat for piece of mind.
