Default HELP!! i can't get my timing cover off!!

Loosened three bolts on each side of the oil pan. How far is it supposed to drop? Because it is not budging. I’m trying to finish my swap this week and don’t want to replace the oil pan gasket. Any tips suggestions?

Did you drop the oil pan? If not then that's why it won't come off. The oil pan needs to come down some to get the timing cover off.

To lower the oil pan. All twelve or so oil pan bolts must be removed. You can however loosen the rear most to to help keep it attached.

+1. Remove them all except for the last two.

It's not necessary to drop the oil pan to remove the timing cover. It is necessary to drop the oil pan to install the timing cover. And unless you put in a new oil pan gasket recently I would highly suggest you replace that crusty thing.

if you are going to all this trouble you should drop the pan, it doesn't have to actually come out of the car to replace the gasket, which is a $25 item BTW altough its always nice to check out the inside of your pan to see if anything crazy is going on in there. THe one time I tried to do a front cover without the pan gasket it leaked like a rainstorm from both corners after and had to get done all over....

you will most likely have to undo the motor mounts and jack up the engine

X2^^^^ that is the best, and really if ur go that far just keep jackin it (HAHA I SAID KEEP JACKIN IT!!) and take the pan completely off, its definately not fun but if ur serious about doin this go 4 it, make sure you take the oil level sending unit off the side of the oil pan before removing it. Oh and use locktite on the oil pan bolts, ask me why I know that 1.....

People on this site love extra work. lol. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO JACK THE ENGINE TO REPLACE THE OIL PAN GASKET!!! I've said on here several times all you have to do is slip the new gasket under the pan above the k-member so it is sitting under it but in place of where it will go. Then you simply pull the gasket straight up working one corner at a time over the oil pan rails. The gaskets are rubber and will not tear as long as you are careful.

Sure, but how clean is that mating surface going to be? It's nice and convenient to replace an oil pan gasket, but if you are going to do it, do it right.

I figured someone would come on here and slam what I have to say as always. Use common sense and clean the bottom of the motor before you start. I really didn't think anyone was retarded enough to change an oil pan gasket while everything is covered in oil. LOL. As far as the mating surface just clean it up with a Scotch Brite pad or something similar. It will take off old gasket material but will not leave scratches.

If you can possibly reach all the mating surfaces, then cheers to you. My hands could not get everywhere and I don't have things as many things in the way as some people. Not saying it can't be done, but that it is such a larger PITA to do than just jacking up the engine, backing out some k-member bolts and taking the whole thing out to clean.
