Default Top speed questions

Im sure alot will laugh, but I just wanna make sure on this. If im right, my 96 trans am shouldn't be speed limited to 85MPH right? The guy i got the car from gave me a crazy story about his wife telling him either it had to have a 85 mph speed limiter or he had to sell it. I figured he was just bluffing or BSing, but it looks to be true, because it sure shuts down at 85.

IDK, other than that the car is strong, im checking with a buddy at the dealership, we are going to try to flash it with a stock PCM calibration.

Someone more than likely set it at 85. Get it re tuned. Tell that guy to start wearing the pants in his house and not his wife.

When i got my car there was a hypertech with it. after a trans rebuild and gear change I took it to Bryan's house ( PCMforless) and he cleared the hypertech and said it had been set at 110.

if your cars didnt come with Z rated tires, they are all set at 110 from the factory. Even v6s were at 118

My old V6 wouldn't do 118. It'd shut off at 110. I could probably hit 150 in the Z28 before the old sixxer could hit the limiter though. lol. Damn shitty 3.4.

Technically even the cars that cam equipped with z-rated tires had a speed limiter from the factory...only it was populated with 255mph.

Any programmer can set the speed limit, not just the Hypertech.
Setting it back to factory should clear whatever tune is in it.

Yes, exactly. I can't believe anyone would do that. I thought you were going to say the guy had it governed at 85 for his 16 year old kid.

If you remove the speed limiter or set it at stock you should be able to get up to 120 pretty easy on a stock setup. Anyone with mild bolt ons and a tune should be able to get up to 150.

mine went past the 150 mark and was still going. Doubt it was really pulling anymore but it was still increasing in rpm's. Maybe mine is just a freak car

Yea, my I/E vert did 120mph the first day I had it, and I wasn't even close to asking for all it had - 300bhp will get you to 150mph in any car with reasonable aerodynamics.
