Stupid question...you are reading it with the car off and parked on a level surface correct?

Was this on the first startup type deal? Think about it, when you do oil changes oil will still remain in the passageways and lifter valley and what not. Why you are adding oil after a rebuild it will have to make its way through all the engine. Also it will use some oil during break in its normal.

Not to mention, if you just added the oil, you have to run the engine to fill up the filter. But that would make it read high, not low.

i know this. i had put 1 quart in the filter and 4.25 quarts in the engine over the rockers and lifters when i was putting it back together. i ran it for at least 20 minutes yesterday and it says that its still 2 quarts low

Did you have dipstick housing out when you did rebuild? Maybe it didn't get pushed all the way in block.

Was the pan put back together with the stock windage tray and baffle? I read in one of your other threads that you were contemplating leaving one out because of fitment issues.

Just fill the thing up to the proper level and keep an eye on it.

i had put in a windage tray. there were no fitment issues. there was just no windage tray to begin with. but it still shows low.

You started out with a bone dry engine. It could very well take 6 quarts. What makes you sure you need two quarts instead of a half quart or one quart? A half quart will raise the oil level on the dipstick considerably.
