its not a 3.73. Not stock. Stock for the 97 SS was 3.42, and if I am right, a 96 Z Auto had 3.23's???

Yeah, M6 car was 3.42's.
A4 car's had either 2.73's or 3.23's. Not sure if the SS's all had 3.23's or not. You'd have to check your option codes.

If it's a 6 speed than yes, stock gears are 3.42's. Time to step up to some 4.10's.

either way you look at it though he doesn't have 3.73's, so its definately time to upgrade...I am gonna go with 3.73's, but he has an auto so I think he should do 4.10 like slp said

I've run my 94' z28 w/ 3.73's with the factory 4L60E with bolt on 350, moderate HC 355 and then moderate 383---->converted T56 (383). I thought the 3.73's were the perfect gear for a 4l60E DD in all combos but alil to numerically low for the 6 speed...however your looking at a A3, guess it depends on your intentions and far high reving your motor is and tire size.

I had 3.08s in my 69' A3 camaro and they were the perfect gear for cruising and DD. Had I want to race it more, I would have went with 3.55 max.

^^^ good method to check them. 2 1/2 turns means 2.73, just over 3 is 3.23. and btw 4.10s are way to big for an A4. IMO:

3.42s-For a DD who hits the strip every so often

3.73s-For a DD that is more focused on their 1/4 mile times

4.10s-For hardcore drag car

RPO code rear gears 94-02

GU6 = 3.42 (all 6 speed Z28 - SS)
GU5 = 3.23 (3 series carrier)
GU2 = 2.73 (2 series carrier)
