5k at most for engine
k guys...i'm starting to get a knock and a bunch of metal shavings in the oil so its time to start building a motor or finding one that's done.
talked to the bank and they said 5 grand is what i can work with. its going to be a weekend street car...might end up at the strip once or twice in its life but by no means a regular. more of a show car which is why i was planning a 396 just because it sounds cooler, but now plans have changed since it decided it didn't want to give me time to save for it.
what do you guys think? no spray will ever be thrown at it either and no boost. don't really know a horsepower goal but i suppose 400+ to the wheels would be nice. i'm all ears!

396 sounds old school...i like old school.
what do you mean a grand for a shortblock if i build it myself? i know nothing about putting a bottom end together as far as tolerances and clearances.
right now i'm leaning towards either of these
A. 355 with forged rods and pistons, just a 2 bolt main and LE heads and cam
B. buying a complete motor. i will post a link to one i found and see what you guys think

if u dont plan on racing it and its going to be a weekend cruiser or show car i wouldnt waste my money on a 383 or 396 lt1 motor. i would build a nice stout 355 heads and a cam which u will have no problem getting at over 400 rwhp out of it. just get ur heads and cam spec'd out by a good company. i see from ur post u were heading towards a lloyd elliot set up. and after all that get it tuned or dyno tuned for max results.
but yes if ur not drag racing i dont find a point in going after the big cubed lt1... just my opinion i guess.

i was thinking a solid 355 as well.
i will probably be picking up a spare block and spare crank from somewhere. any suggestions on rods and pistons? i'd feel more comfortable with an aftermarket rod. i'd probably go with eagle 6" rods and i was thinking about srp pistons?
what are you guys typically paying for machine work and shortblock assembly?

My setup, less than 5k
Stock bottom end with ARP rod bolts and forged piston, balanced.
Ported stock heads LE Budget LE1's
52mm throttle body, 30 lbs injectors,
Cam of your choice, LS7 lifters, Moroso Magnum Rockers
I also used PCM4Less with the tune
That's around 4k I think and you should be 400+ hp depending on cam selection and exhaust.
