Default How much oil do you run (Strokers)

Just wondering how much oil everyone runs around on in there 383, 396 LTX's.

I have a moroso pan I usually use around 5.5-6 quarts (7 quart pan).
What is everyone else running?

If you have a HV Pump I would run all 7 quarts..running it that low kinda defeats the purpose of that Pan.

I have a canton pan, I run 7qts total I fill the filter and dump the rest in the pan, like Merv said I've got a HV pump so not filling the pan kinda defeats the purpose of the pan I would think.

I called Canton on this. They said 5 in the pan with a full filter. It JUST touches the stick in my car with 5 in the pan.

You are giving up horsepower with the crank swinging through all that oil.

I DO put more in it to streetdrive and cruise, but that the track 5 in the pan only.

While the logic makes sense, Canton also just told a friend of mine on the phone that they don't make any pick-ups that work with their pans.

I don't drag-race mine enough to warrant lowering the oil level. Mine is in the middle of the hash marks of the OEM dipstick.

Canton does indeed have pickups for their pans. I can't imagine why anyone would use a high volume pump in any sbc. Your just dumping most of it back in the pan through pump's the bypass. It just heats the oil and wastes hp. I have a Canton on mine, a modified (Larry Stewart LOW volume) pump, set to 45 psi, with 4 qts in the pan after filling the filter. Still has 45 psi at the finish line (8300 to 8500 RPM). Just pulled it down, 2nd year on the bearings and they still look new. They are going back in for next year.

That low volume pump is usually good for five or six hp. Larry sends them out set to 60 psi. I never run more than 45 psi myself.

I hear a high volume pump would be insurance against, what? If a std volume pump is not more than enough in a sbc, you have done something wrong and have other problems. Some engines may need them, not small block Chevys.

For street use, or bracket racing, where you don't need every last hp you can find, a Moroso std volume pump is all you need, and 5 or 6 qts in the pan wouldn't hurt a thing.

Wouldn't the need to run a high volume pump depend on bearing build tolerances and/or modified oiling systems?

Why would anybody run excessive bearing clearancee? Are you talking about more than .003"? If so, why?

Is there advantages on running an aftermarket pan', if you dont run more than 5.5-6qts of oil? Any gains to be had?
