it has cold air intake, catback, and the ignition has been swaped to a coil pack setup that uses the opti spark.

Probably your 02's as (I am not 100% on the 93') the car will run in Open loop until it warms up the cat and 02's and then switch to Closed Loop where it takes sensor information from the 02's for metering how much fuel to use. This sounds like your issue. In Open loop it runs off of predetermined parameters for fuel/air so it will run smooth. Anyone else wanna chime in?

would you happen to know if it has 3 o2s or 2. because i dont have a cat. the o2s did come up in the test so it could be them. but if the o2s are bad would the computer show up too?

93's have 2 and they are 1 wire nonheated o2's, if you have lt's and a ory, the 4 wire o2 conversion is best

The number of 02's is determined by the type of computer not cat. OBD1 (pre96) has 2 before the cat on each bank and (96+) is OBDII that has 4 (2 before and 2 after cat). Not sure about the 93 as they are flash based and also Speed Densisty cars (no MAF - mass airflow sensor). On your's you cannot simply plug a reader in your codes must be flashed thru the SES (check engine) light by jumping pins on your connector (I believe and don't shoot if I'm wrong).

You can easily flash trouble codes on your car (which you should do). Any OBD-I scanner or code reader would also work.

Just curious, how would that help if the O2's are indeed bad? The computer is still going to go into closed loop looking for the sensor data from the O2's and with them unplugged it will still run like crap.

yes it will still run like crap, this is true, but if the o2's are fu#ked then the car would sputter so bad and die all the time. With them unpluged it is at least drivable. I am experiencing same symtoms and this is a temp fix untill I get the o2's this weekend.

My car did that when I first got it, the previous owner pulled the o2's out all together. The car would run rich, then after about 15 mins on the highway the check engine light would come on. I highly recommend that you check your plugs when you fix the problem.

Before you go replacing the O2s get the car scanned or use a paper clip to read the codes. looking at the ADL port under the driver's side dash jumper the far right two terminals on the top row, with the ign in the on position, engine off. The Service engine light will begin blinking, count the blinks between pauses.

Blink - Pause - blink - blink - Pause = a code 12.

it will display code 12 twice, letiing you it ready, then it will blink all the stored codes, when it blinks a 12 again there are no more codes and it will begin cycling through the codes again. (it's a bit of a pain, but if you don't have any someone to read the codes with a scanner it does work.)

Pretty common on the 93 is a bad air pump, Acutally the wire to the pump on the 93s burn up, there was a TSB for this long ago to replace the wire with a heavier gauge ( I think it is the white wire from the fuse box under the hood to the pump). You can also unplug the air pump and see if you still get the check engine problem, on the 93s if you disconnect/delete the pump they don't throw codes, only when it's hooked up? The error thrown by a bad pump comes up as a quad drive error = code 26.

Also rememeber to reset the ECM by pulling the fuse or disconnecting the battery or even if you fix you the probem the code will still show up.
