Cool calling all you high mileage cam guys

i'm on the fence of doing a cam swap. more than likely the cc503. the problems i'm facing is 170,000 mile stock bottom end w/ a 170,000 mile 4l60e. this is my DD so i'm worried i'll destroy the bottom end and have to do the work twice.

should i go for it or save my money and rebuild it later?

words of advice be it good or bad are welcome!

if the NO's win then i will be getting BMR lowering springs.

Ask yourself

1. The way I drive how many miles do I expect a rebuilt engine to last?
2. How long will 170,000 motor last if I baby it?
3. Am I willing to baby it?
4. When can I afford to build the engine and transmission to last for my driving?

Good luck

Short block rebuild with a mild bore and new rings, ARP rod bolts using stock crank and good set of rods, forged pistons.

Save the springs money and put it towards the rebuild as well. Consider a trans rebuild/ improvement as well...

if you have a stock motor and trans with 170k in your DD you should have some money aside as a safety net because murphy's law owns you

you don't wanna have your motor or trans take a crap, get fired from your job because you can't get to work all because you blew your money on a cam swap that does nothing at this point and might've helped put the car back on the road.

i would like to have another car to DD. but if i buy a $1000 pos then i'll be putting money in it as well just to keep it running.

the motor is still in good shape, i.e. not burning/using oil.
i talked to lloyd elliott and he told me that if it hasn't run hot and been regularly maintained then it shouldn't be a problem.

it's not gonna be spinning much higher than stock.

yes i am willing to drive it easy because i drive it easy now.

170,000 miles dd modded LT1 your gonna be in debt so fast its not even funny. **** breaks. People always forget about the 10 bolt, you mod the LT1, you can kiss your 10 bolt goodbye. Get another cheapo dd so when your F body is down you have something else to get to work in.

10 bolts are good if you can get the power to plant and make sure it dont break. They can be very good at getting low 60fts

I have 236k on my engine, but have a rebuilt tranny and rear. I have comtemplated doing a cam, but my only reason for not doing so is that I feel the cam bearings wear more so on lt1's than a sbc That would be my only concern. I guess that you could do the front bearing, as I feel this takes most the abuse of driving the opti also. But at 170k if you have good oil pressure, good compression, I would go for it.
