Anyone running the Comp 236/242?
I bought this cam used off of ebay and will be running it very soon. I don't see very many people running it, so who on here is? What is the powerband like? It seems like it would be better than a CC 306 because of the added intake duration and lift. Specs are 236/242 .557/.576 112+4.

Comp's rpm ranges are WAY off for the LT1. I would not bother with a cam that big unless it was a stroker. A cam under 230degrees on the intake can make a 350/355 sing as high as the pcm can handle.

Typically something with that duration works well in a combo with more cubes because the amount of rpm's it will want with ported heads will be pretty close to maxxing out the stock computer on a 350 and not to mention will be a little sluggish around town (unless you have enough gear, stall, great tune yada yada). Now, assuming you have ARP rod bolts etc. then you shouldn't have any issue with the stock bottom end grenading when you rev it to where it wants to be. It's not a cam I would personally want to run in a 350 but I'm not saying that it won't work or have a nasty top-end. I would spring for that cc503 that's available BUT that is just my .02...
EDIT: I just read you sig and noticed you have a 353, I was assuming you had a completely stock bottom end...Anyways like I said above I assume you have some ARP rod bolts in there?

I assume you also have some ARP rod bolts and such then?

I know you ran that cam in the past. I have all the supporting mods (1.6 pro mag rockers, patriot springs, SS3600, 3.73s). How did you like that cam when you ran it?

I liked it alot because I was able to have a cam that drove very well around town yet performed very well at the track, at the time I use to DD the car an hour each way to school. I was after a decent street/strip cam that would have some thump to it and wouldn't need to be revved ridiculously high. I actually ran it with 3.73's and a SS3600, perfect combo IMO. I wish I could go back to that stall sometimes, excellent street/strip stall. Everybody wants different things out of their cars but that combo worked well for what I wanted and for someone who wants something similar I think it would be a wise choice.

That cam will rock on a 350. It will pull hard from 5K+. If YOU assembled the bottom end and torqued everything perfect and the car has good oil pressure, do it. I would get some decent heads to go with it. You won't need anything extreme, just ported stockers will work. I would get a slightly bigger converter in it if possible.

Like I said a cam under 230degrees can use all the rpm a stock computer can dish out.
Just because "bigger is better" is the oldest and most enduring hotrodding mistake doesn't mean you have to keep it going.
I would put a 503cam in a 350/355 before that other grind or a 847.

needs more converter and 4.11 gears IMO. The IVC is too late that drives the RPMs up, and there's no reason for that wide of an lsa, it just hurts power everywhere. When we're looking at a relatively low rpm n/a motor the pumping losses aren't much of a concern so you don't need to have the exhaust open so early.

i run a cam with the same duration specs. lift is 550/560 and its on a 110. stock shortblock and heads with supporting mods went 7.73 in the eighth mile. jsut throwing it out there. if its a budget build and you can get it cheap then why not. either way good luck
