Default SLP Shorty headers question.

I have the oppurtunity to get a pair of SLP Shorty headers out of a '95 TA. They are emissions legal and it great shape. My car is a '96 Z28 . I am concerned that I will have issues, as Ive read some posts saying that the cars are different in some aspects (besides being a ta vs z28 lol). Also , Ive been told the SLP shorty's use the factory y pipe?

The 93-95 style SLP headers are vastly different than their 96-97 style. They all seem to be lumped together as "shorty" headers, but the 93-95's are a way better design than their 96-97's. The 96-97's were designed to work with the factory dual cat y pipe and no offense to anyone that uses them but they are an awful design. The 93-95's come with a new single cat style y-pipe. They are one of the best headers IMO short of LT's. I bought a used pair of SLP d/c style headers years ago and never installed them due to the poor design. I sold them and bought a set new for a 94 car. Both sets have all the necessary emmissions hookups, I have since deleted all emissions hookups but they are an emmissions legal header. I beleive the only 95 cars that used a dual cat header design were California cars. All other states were still single cat in 95. All 96-97's went to the dual cats.

Go to SLPonline and compare the two styles and you will see the major difference between the two. The biggest issues you will run into when intalling them that I recall are that you will need front O2 extensions and that the y-pipe will not reach your 96 style catback. You will either need to have a piece of pipe bent up or purchase an "S pipe" to mate the y-pipe to your cat back.

I would spend the extra few bucks and find some emission friendly Mids over the shorties. The Mac's are a great Mid length header. I picked up great gains from then on my 94 Z28 and passed emissions/smog testing with no issues. Plus you will see better gains with the mids.

Agreed. The MAC mids are a great header. Had I not touched the internals of my motor 8 years ago I probably would have ran them forever.

I spoke with Joey @ SLP today after work . He says these Headers will mount to my car , all I need is the egr extender tube, which is hard to find. They will mount to my factory y-pipe. They are dual cat headers so Im gravy. Whod a thunk Id get a set of headers for 200 bucks and have them in like new condition?

For $100 more you could get a set of stainless steel long tubes and y-pipe, new.

I run 93-95 style PS mids on my '96. ditched the dual cats for a single magnaflow cat, ditched the egr and blocked up the AIR ports but left all the hardware so it still looks emission legal(I dont have to worry about smog tests btw, just visual and codes) gregg had it right with the header design not to mention the weight you'll shave if you switch to a single cat set up.
or you could go always set up to LT's..

I dont know why everyone refers to Mac's as "mid length" headers, they are not. I run them, they are 1 5/8 primary and tuck up extremely high. The only thing good about them is the plug access and y pipe design. The 1 5/8 primary is the same on Edlebrock, BBK, hooker, JBA.

SLP & As&m are a 1 3/4 primary and still tuck up very well. I think RKsports were also a 1 3/4 but thats what i consitute as a "mid length header".

I disagree. Here is a picture of a true shorty header (these are the SLPs):

Here are the MACs:

The MACs have a noticeably longer tube design than the shorties.

Just to add, the slp shorty pic you posted was the 96-97 dual cat style. They were a TERRIBLE design, but if someone needed a dual cat emmissions legal header I'm sure it's still a decent improvement over stock.

I couldn't find any pics online of the 93-95 style (surprisingly) for comparison, so here are some of mine. Dont have any of the y but it looks very similar to the mac y:

They are 1 3/4" primaries, stainless steel. Had them Jet Hot coated a few years ago to shine them up
