Bad gas mileage is it normal???

When I was 18 I used to drive my mom's Ford Escort twice the speed limit. TWICE. I'd hit top speed (95mph) every day in that car and complain why it can't go faster.
Then got my Impala. 3400SFI V6, limited to 105mph. I'd put it in cruise control at 105mph and lay back and relax. I'd do 80 where limit was 40.
I turned 20 and got tickets one after the other. Then accidents one after the other. Almost died man...have all the fun you want but just don't get yourself almost killed like I did.
Finally realized I just can't pay as much attention as I used to and I slowed down. Now I stick to 85mph in my Z28 on the freeway. Well, unless I hear 3 honks, but that's a different story.

Yeah, toolbox! Get lost!
Let's see... so because an engine is turning over at a higher RPM rate with each downshift, it could be more friction, but it's not vacuum, but it can be measured with a gauge.....
I got nothing. Please enlighten me.
Still no ideas SS RRR? I thought you know everything.

Would anyone happen to know the approximate amount of gas which is represented by a quarter margin (space between two lines) on the fuel gauge of a 4th gen F-body? Maybe only someone with this knowledge from an official source can answer because to calculate it would mean to divide the tank capacity by the physical space operated by the fuel needle, which extends past where the lines are drawn.
So far I've had to calcuate mpg by recording the place of the fuel needle and miles. The problem is that the amount of fuel I need to use for the needle to go where it was before filling takes highway miles mixed with city, and I want to calcuate the individual mileages.

So basically I should've just stuck w/ my original impression of your ridiculousness and not wasted my time. How disappointing.
Depends on how exact you want to do this. If you want the most accurate results then you need to build a tank that holds a predetermined amount of fuel and then calculate the consumption after a given amount of distance. If not then do like everyone else and calculate consumption every time you fill up.

On mine, the half way mark indicates around 5 gallons. The 1/4 mark indicates around 1-2 gallons. When mine hits halway, it drops like a rock.

You could always fill the tank at a specific pump. Drive a certain amount of miles, then fill it back up to the top at the same pump.
Then miles/gallons= mileage. Pretty much just as accurate as the full tank version.

Just something to think about... Why does a Z06, rated at far more power than a stock f-body, have close to the same mpg rating? Why are auto cars most always rated for worse mileage than manuals? Why is it SUV's that have different engine options all get about the same mileage rating, or far worse than a ZR1?
To set the record straight, I do believe gears affect mileage no doubt, but not close to what people claim how going to a steeper gear will "kill" gas mileage. Fuel efficiency is far more influenced by load on the engine and how hard it has to work.
I don't trust you to get the results right, and it wouldn't change my mind anyway based on my own personal experience with the multiple amount of gear swaps I've done in my on turd in the last 14 years.
30mpg out of an auto? I knew Iowa was hilly, but it must be downhill everywhere you go.

I had to make an account just to get in on this! I recently took my z28 (2.73 rear, Auto) on a trip, filled up my tank before i left home. Cruise set on 72ish. when i got there my trip odometer read 301.2 my car took 29.95 gallons. Missouri has hills up and down. Now to be fair, when i drive it hard it gets mid teens. Fried my auto that way (1st and 2nd slip like crazy). swapping to a t56 now. debating 3.73s or 4.10s please feel free to tune in on this.
It's a reference to how many gallons were consumed during the trip, dummy.
