Removing LT1 with Tranny attached

Removing LT1 with Tranny attached
Would it be easier to take the car out of the top with the tranny attached seems like its going to be an absolute night mare to get to the bell housing bolts.
Anyone done this ? or is it just illogical everything I find about taking these things out is out of the bottom.

I did it out the top with the tranny attached, it wasnt bad, but you need to get the car pretty high on jackstands. The weight of the tranny drops the tail down and lets you bring out the motor crank pulley first. I laid under the car with the tail of the tranny on my chest as my friend worked the hoist tied with a chain to the 4 corners of the heads (intake manifold off obviously). I just slid slowly towards the nose of the car with the tail of the tranny as he hoisted up the motor, and eventually it came out the top nicely.

when u put the motor back in it makes it real easy if u lay a creeper on the ground as the motor an tranny is diving in the engine bay the creeper sits under the tail shaft to help it roll into place then u dont even have to have the car on jack stands. ive pulled um out like this too.

^^agreed out/in the top with the happy hooker is very easy, just removed my acc and crank pulley leaving the hub on and it comes right out. Creeper does make for a good idea as well.

Out the bottom is FAR quicker than out the top if you have a good dolley/cradle setup. Me and 94Z28Rag put his 396 stroker in his car over the weekend in under 20 minutes (starting with the engine/trans already on a dolley and the car on jackstands). If you've never done it out the bottom, admittedly it can be a bit tricky the first time. But after the 2nd or 3rd time you'll never take it out the top again.

did it out of the top(with the tranny attached) without the happy hooker, very easy but had to remove bumper and radiator. I did it the firs time from the bottom but I dont like dealing with the brakes line (kinda fragile), and i have a kinda crappy workplace.
Was this thread made upon the previous one where we were debating about this.

I have gone out the top with the happy hooker and dropped it out the bottom on the kmember. I will never go out the top again. So much easier out the bottom. You can put everything on before putting the motor in.

i've taken the motor outta my LS1 T/A 3x thru the top and could do it in around an hour with radiator out and trans staying in ...i remember getting my aftermarket k-member on my LT1 T/A to line up and squeeze in to location was frustrating on a lift ..i couldnt imagine trying to do it on the ground....yikes..
And yes i realise thru the bottom is how it was designed ...but i also dont have concrete to lift the car high on
The bell housing bolts are easily removed with a ratchet wrench

Man, it seems like so much trouble taking it out the top. Too much disassembly.
I've done mine twice, both out the bottom. You can drop the complete drivetrain out with NO disassembly. Just pull battery, coolant reservoir, disconnect brake and fuel lines, and ABS if you've got it.
Once you've done it out the bottom once or twice...it's super easy.
Having a good cradle is worth it though.
