Im only considering not going for the LS3 heads like you are becuz of budget reasons and well becuz I can still do that later...not too bad to swap out heads only down the road.

Thats if I score a long block. If I short block then yea im going with LS3 heads.

I may do a nice cam before I pop her in. But I have no clue when this will all take place........just want to collect the hardest parts first...and keep an eye out for a bargain long block. If i can find some good literature on porting LS heads I'll port them too before slapping it all together.

Hows your project coming along?
To keep your project cost low though, you've got to make your choices sooner rather than later. 317s are a dime-a-dozen even if you don't get a complete motor, LS3s are pretty inexpensive too at just over $600 for a set. I haven't seen any books for porting LS heads specifically (it would only really apply to the cathedrals as LS3/L92 are rectangle and would be similar to porting BBC/SBC spread ports).

My project is coming together slowly, but surely. lol. I have just about all my major components, I'm waiting on my flexplate and balancer to come in right now so I can have everything balanced.

5.3 why mad? I guess you could punch the block out to 4.0 but you'd need all new pistons.

I ask becuz I've seen a few 5.3's as well. I would imagine the rods are the same as the 6.0 . And the crank/stroke is the same i've read. Just not sure if the block's cylinder's spacing is the same.

Unless you guys think the blocks are the same between the 5.3 and 6.0L?

Doesn't it cost more to have to bore out that far from 3.78 to 4.0 ?

You can't take a 5.3 that high, 3.905 (383) is the largest you can go. Bore spacing is the same on all LS engines at 4.40 inches. Rods and cranks are different between cars and trucks (Design, not lengths. Some cranks have a thicker rear flange). I'd just start with a 6.0 and go from there.

Some of them can bore to a 6.0l, it's been done. But it is cheaper to start with a 6.0l.

A .220 overbore and still keep .200 wall thickness on a stock production block with no cooling issues?
