I pulled and installed my motor by myself, through the top with no prior motor pulling experience. Believe me, dooood... pulling a motor is not that big of a deal. Doing it myself saved me thousands of dollars.

1. go to autozone and buy the haynes manual for the 93-02 camaro/firebirds. READ IT THOROUGHLY!!
2. Go to harbor freight or sears, buy a full tool set with wrenches, sockets, and ratchets.
3. Look in the Eastern Members section and find someone willing to let you borrow a lift, or go buy one for $120.
4. It's not very hard to pull the motor, trust me...3 years ago I didn't even know what the intake manifold was, now I've completely torn down my car and am putting it all back together. Trust me, if I can do it you can also.
5. Once you pull the motor do some research on local engine builders, contact them and tell them you want a rebuild, decide whether you want a built badass motor or just a stock rebuild. Expect to pay anywhere from $1k to $2500 depending on what you want done, if your block isn't f*cked.
6. Post up any other questions and make sure to start a build thread when you start this project.

Update:
I jacked up the car and took the oil pan plug out...
Its flowing out a steady stream of milkshake. I have filled the 1 1/2 gallon catch pan twice with no signs of slowing. I get a squirt of water every now and then as the sludge is coming out.
So now what.

I mean I'm sure you have a couple car buddies who can help you out over a weekend. Just get everything prepped and ready before hand and you can easily swap it in a weekend. If the car is as nice as you say it'd be worth it to pick up a new LT1 for 500 bucks or so, spend another 200 or so on new gaskets and fluids and you have a clean good running LT1 for less than 2k. I picked up my 42k mile Long block for 500 bucks just two weeks ago. It's now in my 95 Z28. This is also a great time to do any mods, headers/heads/cam/intake/stall/clutch etc.

That "clank" you heard was likely a rod shearing itself, and its time to rebuild.

It's done time to pull it and go through it or buy that blue print remaned long block from Jegs for 2k and bolt it in and go. It's gonna cost you about the same amount if you take your to a builder and the heads and block are not F'ed so I think the blue print reman engine comes with a 12 month unlimited millage warrenty.

And this is the 92/94 version http://www.jegs.com/i/Blueprint+Engi...5027C/10002/-1

Or you could do a swap.. complete 5.3 w/ 4l60E complete K-member PCM & wiring harness. Swap is pretty much bolt up and go, just have a local shop etc modify your wiring harness etc. If you do the work you easily swap it for around 2k and a 5.3 will be on par power wise with a LT1..or for alittle more go LQ/LS
Whatever you do just man up and do the work yourself. Pays off in the end you save a ton of $$ and nothing like that sense of accomplishment the first time it fires up.

Post some pics of it. FWIW I picked up my '95 Z28 6spd hardtop for 900. Had blown head gaskets and a worn interior.

If you can't swap the engine, then you probably shouldn't try parting it out yourself. If the body and interior is a nice as you say, there's probably a bunch of people who would pay a grand for it, and you've broken even.
