odd........when u got the pan off grab some pics......just whatever you do dont do what i did the first time i built my motor......i put the tube in and then bent it after i put it in so it would clear.......about 6 months later i went to pull the header off and realized i couldn't pull the dipstick out because i ben the end inside the motor......then realized i couldn't pull off the pan cause of the stroker crank and all the pan baffles and stuff it wouldnt drop low enough to come off .......then i went to lift the motor up so it would and my single plane intake was going through my windshield...........long story short i pulled the motor out for a goddamn oil dipstick lol

If it's something he misassembled or a part failure (defect... though I doubt it with all the money I spent on parts) he should fix it. I will say that I'm going to build my own next time though.
Why tow it home if I might need to have it towed again?
I'm saving up for a house (only renting a house right now and it doesn't have a garage) so I don't want to deal with pulling the transmission (and possibly engine) in the driveway again. Especially with all the crazy weather we're having in WI... cold... wind... rain... heat... thunderstorms... etc
Also the car being at the builder's shop will give him motivation to hurry up. LOL.

For a variety of reasons I just had it towed to the builder and I'm going to let him fix it.

I do have Lonnie's dual fuel pump kit but I was waiting to install it until I got it up and running reliably.
So here's my new theory: fuel pump died which caused lack of top end and the bang (detonation) and also shut the car off.

if I were you, I would have been THERE when the pan got pulled. Towing it to a builder and letting him take it apart is giving him a license to LIE about what happened. Fuel pressure and no oil pressure.. LOL did you put the injector fuse back in before you dropped it off?
The last time I heard a bang and had no oil pressure (LOL) ....

It's not so uncommon for a SBC to have a little valve train clatter at startup until the oil works it's way through the pushrods. Some have it-some don't. The builders explanation of "air in the system" is a pretty good answer and may be right on the money. I think you guys are prematurely bashing the builder. Roxy does her homework and wouldn't have given him the work if he was questionable, had no recommendations or a bad reputation.
(re: quik95LT1's photo) This is an engine with factory-style four bolt mains, IOW, all four bolts are straight. When using splayed outer bolt main caps, they may obstruct the dipstick tube. Roxy, which main bolt style do you have?
I'm leaning towards this being a fuel issue.
