I'm not about to spend 80 bucks on a piece of plastic... that's ridiculous. I know someone made the tool out of aluminum and was selling them for about 15 a few years ago, but he has since stopped making them....


I can't find those big sharpie markers anymore either. Apparently when I used the drive shaft coupler to instal the seal last time it still got screwed up, so does anybody have a source for the proper installation tool? BTW, I'm talking about the water pump drive seal that goes into the timing cover. My new one leaks like a sieve.

 

I use a hockey puck as a seal driver.


Or a socket. Probably gonna be a 13/16 or a 3/4-ish, hell maybe a 5/8, idk.

Don't you have any sockets? That's what I use.

 

I'm talking about the tool that allows you to slide the seal on to the water pump shaft, not to pound it in. I have plenty of sockets for that part, but I'm pretty sure I either tore or folded the seal over when installing it since it still leaks. I used the water pump drive shaft coupler to install it last time.

 

Slide the seal over the socket and then slide it into the pump shaft off the socket is what he's saying.

I think i ended up using a 12 or 13mm socket to do this.

 

i used a TIG welder, small piece of aluminum and filled the hole in then installed a electric pump, no more leaks for me!

 

Ummm, I slide the seal over the socket...in place of using the coupler. A socket is much smoother and makes a perfect tool.

 

I picked up one of the "tools" for $15. It measures 17.65mm ND A 12MM SOCKET MEASURES 17.60....so that will work

the tool does have a beveled tip which makes starting the WP seal over it easier than a socket

they both work

 

I'm with Shbox. The extra 30 seconds of finicking to get the seal over the socket is worth $15 I saved

 

I used a cap from a large permanent marker. Worked perfect and was alot cheaper than ordering tool.

 

I'll try a socket this time. Like I said above, I used the WP coupler, but I had to sort of stretch the seal a bit to get it on to the thing to begin with.... I may have either stretched it too far, or it just simply rolled over when I knocked it home. I'm also going to start the motor up BEFORE i put the WP and everything back on just to make sure the leak is sealed. I had everything back together last time before I fired it up and noticed that the leak was still there.

 

If you are stuck on wanting a large marker for making that tool Wal-Mart has them right now for back to school stuff. I seen them in black today and I thought about this thread lol

This was just ment for the guys that dont and it sounded like there were some who wanted a source for this tool at a fair price. You keep using your socket as many times as you like.
