Default How to determine if programmer tuning is installed? (or not)

1997 Camaro Z28 SS, the cooling fan(s) come on early. I haven't had a chance to check, but they're pretty much on all the time after it warms up and you're city driving. On the highway...I don't know. I think they turn off.

Is there a way to tell if a tuner has been installed?

Any info or insight is appreciated. Thank you.

You have a few options:

1. Buy a ALDL cable and use some of the various free software and a laptop to check it yourself.
2. Send it to PCM for less or another mail order programmer and get it retuned for about $175( recommended).
3. Go buy a stock PCM from the junkyard/ebay/craigslist/whatever

if the car runs and you dont have problems with it, leave it alone. hypertech is possible, or maybe a mailorder tune. your best bet is to contact the original owner and just ask him, hunting down this mysterious tune is probably a waste of effort and $$. if your gonna change the car, your gonna need a new tune anyway

yes, but the heat still blows hot, and the fans only turn on after the car is warmed up. its just changes the operating temp of the engine which isnt hurting anything. and the dealer reprogram is gonna be stupid money. if your dead set on changing it back to stock, contact bryan herter at PCM for less. i used him for my tunes and had great experiences with his work. he will be way cheaper than any dealer

Thank you, Stuart. That sounds like good advice.

Heat still blows (fairly) hot. I had a 1996 Z28 years ago and the heat felt hotter, as I remember.

I'll have to find the PCM and make a few phone calls.

If it's not broke, don't fix it

Good idea!

What I need to check is if the fan stays on when it's at speed. That might wear it (them) out a bit too soon.

What's the ALDL Cable? is there a post you can refer me to? My search foo is weak.

factory cuts them off at either 35 or 45 MPH. have a buddy hang under the car and watch to see if it stops or not
