Might need it if it has loose clearances. Whats the oil psi like?

Clearances in the motor would dictate this to some degree but frankly I would worry about eating up the oilpump drive daily driving with that weight oil.

Im running valvoline vr1 20-50 in my motor due to the loose clearences. No problems so far with it.My engine guy also told me to switch it out for something a little thinner in the winter and run the 20-50 in the summer.

Dave was on the right track asking about what the current pressure is.

If it is perpetually in bypass then a thinner oil would move more volume across the bearings and be a good thing.

If you think it is built with loose clearances you could always try say a 10w-40.

use whatever will get you roughly 50-60 psi at your highest rpm, and somewhere around 15 at idle. I run 0w-30 synthetic, makes 20/65 at running temp which seems healthy.

...bearing clearances that are greater than normal specs...

My builder told me to use 20w-50 in mine as well when we built the motor up back in 1999. I use Mobil1 15w-50 and I've never had a problem with oil pump or pressure. Car runs strong.

I usually run 10w30 but have used 10w40 in hot summers.

if the previous owner said use it, that would indicate the motor was set up with wider bearing clearances than stock. Often done on re-build performance motors and then a thicker oil is recommended. Ideally he had a build sheet that notes bearing clearance.

These type of motors often come with HV oil pumps. Motors with stock bearing clearances should not use HV pumps or thicker oil as to much strain/wear on pump drive gear results.

as stated by everybody above has alot to do with clearances and how the motor was built............i run the valvoline VR1 20w50 in mine ive never had an issue in 7 years.......ran it in my 355 for 3 years and this motor for 4 years.....never broke a pump drive or shaft.......run a good gear and a good pump drive shaft and your fine.......im 55psi @ 8000 rpm and 25psi idle........all you need

As already brought up by two of use "what pressures is it running at?".

IMO if it sits at 60+psi at cruise and above it is just on bypass and then the thick oil is a mistake. I wouldn't just take a previous owner's word without applying a little common sense of my own. Then again I probably wouldn't buy a built car unless I knew a LOT about it because so many are halfassed so badly.
