Default Autobahn Reliability

Hey guys im so excited I just bought my 1st american muscle car a 1995 Camaro Z28 6-speed with the LT1. Ive always been fascinated with the american muscle cars. As some of you may know we dont have speed limits on some of our highways and 130+ mph driving here is a norm for sports cars. Its so safer also because theres 3 lanes. 1 lane for semi trucks, 1 lane for slow cars, and 1 lane for people that are late for work. The question is how reliable is an LT1 at 200kph-280 around 120 to 150mph? I work in Berlin and live in Dresden about 200km away and have to drive to work on a daily basis. I know german cars are made for that but im curious about the american engineering. The car has new wheels and tires. Z rated tires 245 35 ZR18's and 335 35 ZR18's rear Continental Tires. I know americans arent use to these types of speeds but just to let you know its is perfectly normal and safe or else there would be a speed limit here.

btw the car has 100k miles.

oh i almost forgot what is the top speed of a 6 speed LT1 lol

Top speed varies. Some state side cars are limited but I have no idea about euro cars. The biggest thing to worry about when pushing the cars to constant high speed would be cooling the fluids. Make sure the cooling system is up to par and that if the car is equipped with an oil cooler, it works. Any other fluid coolers you add will only make the car more reliable. Aside from that, have fun and drive safe!

I had my 96 at 140 for a short stretch, but could not hold it there due to the vibration coming from the drive shaft (and maybe the wheels), but I'm running 4.10 gears and 245X40X16 tires. I guess if you are in the 2.7ish rear end,, have a little bigger tire, and all is well balanced, it should be a hoot!

A lot depends on the condition of the car. Its around 17 years old now, so its not gonna run like new. At 100k miles on a 95, id be more concerned about the body than the engine. Any mods?

Before they came out with the over 50kmh siezure law I regularly drove at 100-120mph(160-200kmh) when I was on the 401 or 402 in Mexico

My 94 TA was very stable at those speeds even on our crappy Mexican roads

Make sure the rad and hoses are in good shape and the cooling fans come on when she warms up.

You may want to add the factory optional oil cooler that was available as well.

Throw it in 6th and use the cruise control and get great gas mileage at the same time

Id be more concerned with the chassis at that speed than the motor. As long as nothing is vibrating and your tires are in good shape, Id say you'll be fine.

Your car will run its fastest in 5th gear. Overdrive is just for cruising at 100-130km/h and getting fuel economy. Your top speed should be around 245km/h (150mph) If the car's wheel alignment and balancing are correct, it will be very stable at high speeds with no shimmy or vibration. Always keep the oil filled right up, and check it regularly.

If you want to go faster, there are lots of go-fast parts to make that thing fly.

Thanks guys for the advice. Ill be testing this bad boy out in the morning on the way to work. The motor is stock. Few mods are chrome intake, matte black deep dish wheels, tires, blacked out tail lights, the Cat gutted out. The car is rust free. Previous owner took care of it. The thing sounds nice, like a purring cat when you let off the throttle and the back-fire kinda turns me on

In the near future when I really get into mods what is possible to reach 200mph without any boost? I know im crazy but 200mph here is like 150mph there in America. I like the fact that the Chevy V8 engines only need 1 camshaft From my knowledge here it takes about an average of about 500rwhp of enough power to weight (3500lbs) ratio break 320kmh mark. What engine combo and gear ratios work best for the american cars to hit 320?

The first thing I would do is a set of konis and c5 brakes. The stock shocks and brakes are definitely a saftey factor for anything over 100mph. Other than that I would keep an eye on oil temp, trans temp, and rear diff temp.

When my car was basically stock I crossed Montana with the cruise set at 120mph multiple times, only slowed down for gas stops, the car loved cruising at that speed with a 6 speed and 3:42 gears.

Yea I would def. say that suspension components, fluids, and brakes should be looked over before you decide to push the car to its limits. Just feel out the car and slowly increase speed and see what happens. My Camaro is far from stock suspension, and motor and it can handle high speeds no problem.
