Default 96 lt1 to ls1 swap

i have a 96 z28 with an lt1 that has 76,000 original miles. i went to see jesse today at wait 4 me (which i could not recommend any more for a tune. seriously did a great job) and we got to talking about my plans to start dumping in a cam next weekend. well...he started to convince me that spending a grand to dump in a cam for sixty horsepower isnt as good of an idea as just swapping to an ls1 and gaining more power stock. well...im lookin for some opinions on this. Its somethin i could handle...i just don't know where to start...or even if this is a better option? any experiences or thoughts on this? i plan on selling the lt1 in it now. but...im on a budget of around 2,000 or 2500 on top of what i could get for the lt1..and i really have no clue what i could get. this is just somethin i need some help on? what would i need to get? could ls1 fit on original tranny? where would be a good place to buy an ls1? and sell the lt1? i'm just a little underinformed on the subject. anything else i need advice or help on? thanks alot

Double your budget. It's a lot of nickel and dime stuff but worth every dime.

There are some cost to changing over to the LS1 The LT1 with a cam will work great for you. I have now owned 3 LT1s and 3 LS1s. I do not feel there is a big advantage of power from the LS1 unless you plan to to add mods to it. Currently I have an LT1 with 400 horse and my friends with LS1 Vetts will not challenge me. I know LT1s are fading from popularity, but there are some of us who will work with an LT1 just because of the challenge. If you are planning on selling the Z28 do not do anything just sell it the way it is.

Front suspension, transmission harness ecm exhaust engine accessory drive steering etc its a lot of work and money. I went with a 6.0 and im up around 5k and its still not in. Oh and you need a transmission crossmember.

Not gonna happen with your budget. Do the cam swap the right way, maybe some head work and you'll be more than happy.

If you're not then spray it till you are.

LT1 vs LS1 is only a couple tenths difference mod to mod, so In reallity its not worth it unless youre doing a max effort build.

Ive owned both and prefer the LT1.

Just as AC said, they are not a HUGE difference from one another as people make them out to be. With a good cam, fully ported intake and heads, and all supporting mods (fuel, ignition, trans, gears, full bolt ons, tune), you can make very respectable power with a setup like that.

If you do decide to go ahead and do the swap, try to find like a LQ9 block or something instead of just an LS1. I see LQ9 (6.0L) blocks on ebay and a few near me on craigslist from $300 for a bare block to like $1000-$1500 for a shortblock.

Not sure about an LT1 trans bolting up, but I highly doubt it since an LT1 is a late model generation of a 350 and an LS1 is its own as a 346 or 347, whichever it may be lol.

I don't know if you saw the link in your other exact same post in the Gen III section.

This was my swap. For some reason some of the pictures don't work anymore. But it will give you an idea of what to expect and what you need.
