Default New Lt1 Owner help with Heads and Cams

I just bought a 97 z28 with the Lt1 it has an exhaust and intake and i wanna know what kind of cam to get? Im not looking for an over aggressive cam just a mild cam because it is my daily driver. Also what kind of headers should i get because ive heard a lot about how the long tubes dont fit right and require a lot of work?

Read through this and then ask questions:

try a search for you header question, there's several brands that all fit diffently at various price levels.

First what do you want out of the car? is it auto or manual if auto you will need a stall and gears. depending on how big of cam you want might need gears for manual what heads are you using? Pacesetter makes good and cheaper long tube headers that work great if using stock heads the cc503 cam is great most people say biggest you want to go with stock heads. You will new valve springs, gaskets and I would go with 1.6 roller rockers and harden push rods. New timing chain set and depending on how the lifter look might want to get new lifters

As someone who jumped in and did a cam early on in the mod process I am going to tell you stop thinking about a cam and worry about all the other boltons first.

^^ what he said, work on bolt ons then suspension, then internals. I had a customer that went with bolt ons, suspension work, stall and a tune and went 13.00 flat on a bone stock LT1..

^^ I'm going to agree with the idea of finishing all the bolt-on's first and then consider a cam and heads. Much can be accomplished with good suspension parts and bolt-on's. My car is a perfect example of that statement: 12.61 @ 109 in a full weight WS6 LT1 (6 speed). That time was on my old suspension setup and a few less mods. Pretty sure the car has a 12.40 @ 110+ in it as it sits now. Many of the guys that have posted are giving you good info when they suggest exhausting all bolt-on options first.

Good luck, let us know what you decide to do

Best deal is like everyone said Complete bolt ons & suspension Then buy another motor / shortblock & build whatcha want That way you can buy the best stuff you can save for Believe me if you do it all at once It hits the wallet hard LoL If your car is a 6spd get 4.10 gears Auto = 3.73s & a stall 3600 would be good for a N/A car That should getcha started

Yeh im going to do all the basic bolt ons and suspension stuff too i know jumping in with a cam and headers would be stupid but i just wasnt sure after the bolt ons and stuff which way to go with a cam and headers for a everyday street car that i just wanted to go a lil faster with im not lookin to build a full race car right now.

In that case you don't really need a cam to reach that goal...

One mistake I made actually was going with 4.10s in my M6/Dana S60 but that's because I'm going boosted. I wish I went with 3.54s instead - but if you're going to be NA then 4.10s are fine.

Bolt ons, gears and a tune, Your there. Read what I posted about the guy that went 13 flat on a stock LT1, later he threw in a 100 shot and ran 12.2...
