What's it like being a LT-1 Owner in 2019?
Bought mine new in 1994. It's had its ups and downs, is on its 4th engine, and one of these days I'll finish the fuel pump replacement. It's been hanging out on the lift for about 9 months now. It's like a cat, it likes being perched up high.
I started to read. STTTTARRTEDD... but there is no way I'm spending time reading through all of this horse **** nonsense. And it's not really nonsense BTW. Fact of the matter is - no matter how good an old platform performs - it's an old platform and generally garners less excitement. I remember when tune port injection motor swaps were the absolute ****. "LOOOOK! It's gotta new fuel injected Vette motor in it!!!" It's just not as cool anymore. Time moves on.
Nadagadam thing wrong with an mid year LT1. Just not a ton of knowledge out there, does not carry a bunch of mystique (like a ZL-1 for example) so peeps dont get excited. I still see these these motors pop up here and there in street rods etc. I always think, huh, it's on older build with a TPI. Cool. Old. But cool.
The LS's had time to become legendary. As did factory big blocks. As did Ford 5.0's. Those TPI/LT1 motors were a good, significant piece in the evolutionary chain of GM HP V8's. Bu they were sandwiched between relative **** and then decent awesomeness, they havent and never will get the love some think they deserve. No Biggy. They weren't an easy tuner motor to tinker around with compared to 5.0), were still descendants of a traditional small block, and so much """""""better""""""""" stuff has come along that it makes them occupy a niche.
I have 0.0004527% interest in those motors. If I came across a clean 94 or so that I couldn't pass up I'd be 100% rock hard at thinking how I was gonna build it.
Back your **** up with numbers. Do a reverse to 2nd candy cane burnout, or whatever you need to flick the ignorant ******* in the head. And then just dont worry about it.
GM F'd with mechanical fuel injection in the 60's. Some of the highest HP rated cars they ever built. You're not seeing an overwhelming amount of love, support and understanding for those things either. And they're worth money.
So what you goota do to get through and stay true to you boo.... and say F'em. Can't be sad about having a platfrom most folks arent interested in. So don't wporry about it. Ot give them a reason to take notice.
The cars aren't that noteworthy in general. A 69 Camaro with a stock 350 will garner more attention than your car that can run circles around it in every way. FWIW, I cruise with a friend with a 69 Camaro 350 LT-1, cammed, full FM exhaust, lowered on Hotchkis, 17 inch chrome cragers, C5 front brakes....... He and I both know his car is a joke in everyway compared to mine. But pull into a show, gas staion or anywhere and guess who's car people are excited about?
If you dont like it sell it and buy something with a bit more panache. I like my comfy, modified suspension ride, good stereo, cheap GM leather, steering wheel controls, reliability, factory sound insulation, no rust to deal with piece. Lt em drool over the cool looking turd. I'm more interested in living and driving.

How many beers were in you when you typed that out?
In all seriousness, and as I said in another thread in the lounge, I'm perfectly satisfied with my LT1 SS. Last year when I went to the track I managed beat a couple modified 5th gens with my broken looking LT1. I wasn't really faster, just quicker off the line and I came prepared. It's the same satisfaction I remember having from years ago when racing on the street and track waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the 90's and early 2000's.

I have seen you guys talk about it alot on the forum it's not all about the horse power. Part of it is setting up and tuning the suspension. Some of you guys have had years to perfect your suspension setups and are able to out run cars that make more power then you.
I personally really like my car and I wouldnt trade it for a new one. I actually get a good amount of compliments on it and people showing interest in it. I will say they seem to be getting pretty rare around here though. I sware a few years ago they were every where.

At any rate, onto the main post. I do love my LT1. My with current mods the car can be really fun. Yeah it can be under powered compared to many modern vehicles today. But you know what? I built that horsepower I didnt buy it. And if some rich daddy's kid wants to shove that in my face or someone who cant even change their own spark plugs wants to talk like they're the ****. I'll just humble them by reminding them of that fact in front of everyone and that'll usually shut them up. On the flip side as mentioned before, I could really care less what others think. I like turning a wrench on my car, I like that fact and the fact that if I want to add some modern day comfort or style I have to do it myself and possibly find a way to make the technology of today work with an old *** car that I can fondly remember came out brand new while I was still in high school. Hell I still remember the old school commercials. My Comp T/A has 55k original miles on it, fire's right up and after winterizing and sitting for 6 months there "Might" and I mean "Might" only be a couple drops of oil on the garage floor. I would love to have a newer car but ill never let this one go
When I show up at a Cars & Coffee event, or a dragstrip, or any other gathering of gearheads these days, mine is usually the only LT1 powered car there. Heck I don't really see very many 4th gens at all anymore, even LS1 cars. It's been that way for a number of years now. Back in September I was at a Cars & Coffee event and out of probably 300+ cars I only saw two that were LT1-powered, mine and a C4 vert that parked about 3 spaces down from me. I've had this car for 19 years and know practically every nut and bolt on it. I enjoy driving it, I like the way it sounds and it's capable of playing tag with some of the newer stuff out there every once in a while when the law is looking the other way. And nowadays, you don't see nice clean ones like mine on every street. So I reckon I'm perfectly content with it.
My car if headed in a direction I've wanted it to go for many years finally. More of a streetable strip car. I still have plenty to do, lots of planning and plenty of money that needs to be spent but I've sunk 9 Grand into it the last two months... And this month is my 19th anniversary with it so I've had this car longer than I've had my wife... Whom I took on our honeymoon in this car. It's not leaving, it's getting better!!
I’ve noticed it’s much harder to find parts. Craigslist used to be riddled with LT1 part outs and random parts, and you “could” find about anything if you searched. Now it’s kind of a waiting game. It took quite a bit of time just to find a stock location cold air intake this week, any intake, even overpriced or eBay ones. Finally found one on Facebook, for $40, and he’d been trying to sell it for a while because there’s no market. You end up sitting on parts for years then throwing them away, hurting the situation further.
Even worse, finding tires in a “used to be common” 275/40/17 size used is near impossible. Everything is 18-20s. Can’t even find a drag wheel and tire thats 10.5” wide. Years ago there were a bunch of used options for a 26/10.5/16, even easier was a 15”.

Age brother, age. Car trends come and go like fashion. For example, the murdered out look. It will eventually pass and the cars that have been murdered out will start to look shabby. It's a great sinister look If it's taken care of but if it's let go it looks like some old trashed out ride a meth head would drive. That's exactly why I stay with polished. It always looks good and never goes out of style.
You're totally right though, as cars age and new trends come as well as factory evolution it gets harder to find stuff for older cars. We'll just keep hammering away at our old stuff and try to keep it relevant!

I'm in hampton roads va. There is almost never any used parts worth a damn. I have a bunch of stuff I'm gonna offload soon as my car is running I'm dreading posting it for sale because I dont think most of it will sell and I'm just wasting my time. I'll probably throw most of it out.
I look for 4th gen camaros and I dont see many on the road i see a few on craigslist for sale but hardly any being driven. And alot of the ones I run across are either all ragged out or v6s it's not common to see a good nice clean 4th gen anymore. I almost never see 3rd gens
