Default Deep into this 94 Z28...

No issues. But, im just looking for an in-depth checklist i guess? Gave the mostly assembled shortblock to a reputable shop, they did good work but i guess i shouldve taken more apart before hand. Just trying to not get out of sequence and end up redoing things twice or thrice. Feeling kinda dumb and out of date. I haven't gotten the new brain updates for this gens interwebs. I keep coming up with worthless stuff. Think we got everything but push rods and lifters. Took everything apart back in October, so memory fuzzy as well with all the happenings.

Help me knock my rust off and point me to a good full assembly checklist? Im finding all the wrong diagrams and stuff.

Its a 94 Z28, spline drive opti.

Which way does this oil cooler thingy go? I cant find a reference, and machine shop took it out. Picture 1 or 2? It fits both ways.

A lot of people would probably tell you to remove the oil cooler, which is probably what I would do unless you’re just dead set on having it installed. I seem to recall reading speculative posts that it was more effective as an oil heater during startup for cars in cold climates than as a cooler, which doesn’t seem to be a concern for you. If you do decide to remove it, you’ll need the proper bolts that replace those two studs. I removed mine for no particular reason. My oil pressure increased afterwards, but I think I changed the filter at the same time, and my car had sat for several years around the time I did all of that.

I’ve also read that the ‘94 and earlier coolers were a better design than the ‘95+.

I could be wrong, but I believe what’s in your photos is just the oil filter adapter and not the actual oil cooler. I think the cooler mounts to the adapter. If you don’t run the cooler, you would just mount an oil filter there, but the studs would prevent you from being able to mount the filter.

If you did use the cooler, the orientation of the adapter might influence how the cooler mounts. Otherwise, if you just run a filter it may not matter.

The FSM might clarify, assuming you have one.

It is just the adapter, he is dead set on using it as its stock. Everything is in great shape but had oil leaks, so...here we are with a rebuilt short block 355, heads and intake done by Elliot, all new suspension, etc etc. Oil cooler seemed to work just fine, and new oil pump and what not. He wants it. I just cant figure out which way it goes, or if it matters.

I was going through the manual i downloaded here on my phone, but haven't found it yet. Frustrating on the phone. Were held up by a few small parts anyways, when i get back to the house I'll dig deeper in it.

This is a 94 Z28 6spd, had real good track record of warranty work and other maintenance for first owner to 160k or so, my buddy got it with 200k miles. Heads had been replaced, but not ported or anything, and they did a **** job putting everything together, sobit had some leaks.

Mac mid length headers was a big thing. He wants long tubes, so I'm trading him mine out of my 96 WS6. We think trans has been rebuilt because it just feels really smooth and shifted real nice. Overall, car is an 8/10 for shape of interior and body. Dash only cracked a little, still intact.

Anyways, fun project to do. My WS6 needs the same treatment to my engine, she won't stop leaking.

If you’re going to use the cooler, the lines are going to run to the front of the car, so it likely only mounts one way. If the adapter orientation affects your ability to mount the cooler correctly, then reverse it. Otherwise, I bet it doesn’t matter. I can take a look at my FSM when I get a chance and see if it shows anything.

Depending upon the brand of long tubes you run, it may be necessary to remove the cooler. My long tubes are Kooks and that might actually be why I removed my cooler. You may not be able to mount/remove a filter with the cooler installed. I want to say the filter is right above the collector.

I guess you may not be planning to run long tubes.
