Default Why OBD I??

i have a 97z and plan on doing a heads and cam package here pretty soon and i was wondering why people switch from obd II back to Obd I and how do you pass the plug in emissions? i for one like using obd II i can hook up my scanner and read all the live engine data look at fuel trims and all the o2's at once to dectect a problem which i couldnt do with obd I so im just wondering whats the advantage of switching..

The main reason I went with it was Tunercat is a lot less than LT1_edit and I had already downloaded free scanning crap for the OBD1. So I sold my O2simms and went the way of the OBD1.

Depending on your local laws, OBD1 is easier to work with, no rear O2's to go bad or contend with, you delete your cats for more power, delete all the JUNK like AIR, EGR, etc. PLus the "tuners" like it easier when a problem occurs.
And also...
Tunercat is a lot less than LT1_edit

So if you're running OBDII then you can't get rid of that stuff?

OBD1 may not give as detailed a codes but Datamaster lets you view and record anything the pcm sees and you can play it back in realtime or slower, don't think OBD2 is the only one that gives you access too that stuff.

Here is what I have in my OBD1 swap
$110 with shipping for an ebay laptop
$65 for ALDL cable
$90 for Tunercat(not VIN locked like the $200 LT1 Edit for OBD1)
$50 for unlimited pcmforless.com updates
$90 for Datamaster
$75 for a junkyard pcm
$3 for solder and resistors to make the pcm work with OBD2 knock sensors

Total is still under that of just LT1 Edit of OBD2 which is VIN locked. I could do without Datamaster because freescan is free but Datamaster is second to none in logging and will record 20+ minutes of data easily that is tranny and engine data. An OBD1 swap will not pass IL plugin testing though so you would have too go back to OBD2 if you mods are such that the car would throw no codes like that.

I have OBDI on mine because I bought LT1_Edit before there was a version for OBDII.

You can but you'll have to program it for those ideals. OBD1, the PCM doesn't even recognize they're gone and trip a code.

Mine makes about 15 rwhp more with an OBDI box in it, can't tell you why.

well when i register the car back in ill i will have to have the test where they plug in, but in MI there is no emissions so im ok now... isnt there a way you can lock in the readiness settings that is used to determine the pass or fail of the plug in test? and program to delete the air and egr if i decide to remove those? i will probably keep the cats on i havent seen any proven results of removing them except for a raspy and really loud exhaust plus i have 2 3'' magnaflow high flow cats that are dying to be used..
