high volume, always, the LT1 comes stock with a GMPP high volume pump anyway. dont forget to get the feed tube welded, and set the feed at the correct depth (about a 1/4" from the bottom of the pan) some doughy substance works good for measuring this.

I thought with stock pans you are supposed to use std volume? I was under the impression a high volume will pump too much oil up top and leave your bottom end dry. Just what I thought. With the 6 and 7 qt pans you got extra oil for the bottom end and the high volume works well. If the stock LT1 had a HV I didn't know it.

high volume pumps with stock pans are not the best idea. under hard driving you can drain the pain dry. unless you use a light weight oil

The LT1s oiling system is pretty good, a high volume pump will just sap a little more power and as mentioned could suck the pan dry under sustained high rpm usage.

I don't think there is any need for a high volume pump with a stock oil pan. STD volume pumps are plenty, even for a built engine. Besides oil system capacity I believe another determining factor would be how the bearing clearances are set. I know a few engine builders that run almost all std volume pumps, and change the spring to raise oil pressure.
