I went to my mech and askd if i could put a new set of ported LT1 heads on my car, not a good idea. He sayd my rings would blow out so fast. I guess he is right he knows what he is doing. As for a cam though, i did not ask. IM thinkin maybe a mild cam like the CC 501. I want to hit 12s with bolts ons and a cam. Im gettin a little weight reduction. But i really want some power, cuz at this time i dont have 6k for a nice engine rebuild. Any Ideas Guys?

Buddy of mine made 411whp on the stock 130k mile shortblock with LE2 heads and a GM847 cam. Do a compression check on the motor, if it turns out decent, I dont see how putting heads on will make it just all of a sudden take a ****.

Exactly. you want to do a running compression test as well just to make sure no problems but start with a cranking compression test. besides the way i always see it is if it breaks just gives you more incentive to fix it and make it better.

I took the rings out of my car the season we put the heads on. Engine had 36k on it.
Then there is the wifes car. 95 Z28 with 141k Miles. LPE 211/219 cam, SLP headers, K800 springs, Crane retainers, 1.6 SA rockers, Moroso CAI, and Borla Cat back.
Camed it at 130k Miles and it runs 13.00 with a mild tune. Won a few trophies racing this year and is still rocking hards

you do a compression test yet? walmart has them for $20. that will tell you alot. post your results.
and if you're are still worried about the 306 having to much, go with the 305. it could easly take you into the low 12's with full bolt on and traction.

Im not worried about power, Im just saying that right now i have 137k and im oil changing BEFOR or ON TIME. So i think ive treated her good. When i takd to My mechanic about doing a Head swap, he said i would blow my rings right off the bat after like 20 miles. He said some other stuff that would happen too. I dont see how even putting an 847 in the car would hurt too bad. Other than openin it up and not being able to get the compression back to normal.
I guess ill call him up tommorow and talk to him about cam swap. I should have swapd at 126k when i got the car. But at that time i had no idea what i was gettin myself into.......

Since all mechanics see is broken cars they are very willing to tell you something is gonna blow. And a lot of older mechanics that have givin up there hot roding ways are very scornfull of aftermarket parts.

The LT1 breaks a LOT of the old "rules" at your milage it is downright normal to have crosshatch left in the bores with no noteable bore wear. Bet when he sees compression numbers he is shocked the "old rules" were up to about 180psi could be tuned to run 93 octane on the street my 180K mile LT1 in my Roady wagon cranks more like 200 and runs perfectly on the recommended 87 octane. Guys on the b-body boards cam old cop car at and beyond your milage and a cop car has seen so much idling time over and above the milage. The bearings are the only thing that might concern me our oil recommendations were based on CAFE not what was best for the engine and some oils in the recommended weight are not as appropriate as people believe. If you want to mod your car I would strongly encourage you to learn todo the work yourself. Most mechanics even competent ones are going to be resistant to doing this stuff and the installation will often cost as much as the parts.
On that cam one of the b-body guys with a self built 383 and self ported iron heads with stock rockers and that cam has gone 11.8 on motor and 10.9 on a 180 shot of spray, the lift on that cam is low enough that I would recommend 1.6 roller rockers maybe even 1.7s if you set the heads up to support the over .560 lift that would give you. IMO this would shock a lot of people with the performance you will get out of this "too small" cam. The same guy that is running that cam in his 383 ported a set of irons for another guy and they put in a Comp XE with just 212 on the intake and he went 12.49 first day out on the new combo so I would say the performance they are getting out of these little cams is not a fluke. Before someone accuses me of it I am not saying swap to the irons either it was just relavent info.
