Default 3:73 Gear?

I was just wondering how much a 3:73 gear would really help your car. A buddy of mine has a stock 99 GT (5-speed) and is putting a 3:73 on there. I thought whenever you got a gear, you lose top end. What do you think he will top out at? Will it make his car a lot faster? Also, I used to have a gear on my older camaro and whenever it got passed 50 or so, it just felt like it would die. But, before I had the gear it felt like it had some ***** up top. I honestly feel that the gear made my car slower from a roll and made me top out sooner. Does that make any sense?

with a 5speed GT he'd be better off getting some 4.10s. Heck if I didn't drive as much on the highway as I do, I would have gone to 4.10s in my car. Yes you're going to loose some top end by installing numerically higher gears, but they will help you accelerate better off the line.

With a 3.73 gear in virtually any car with overdrive you still have alot of topend, even more so with a car that has a good RPM range or up to 6000 or more. I think the topend loss would be negligable because its not like you are gonna use the extra top end you would have over the higher(numerically lower) gear. With 3.73's in an A4 car, in overdrive you could, if you had enough power, could go just over 145mph@ 5000 rpms. Gears are something that can make a big difference in acceleration, and often the swap from 3.23 to even 4.10's doesn't make a big enough difference in top end to worry about, it does however raise cruising RPM's enough to lose some gas mileage, which is why most people are worried about swapping.

In a 94 Z A4 with 3:23's, would it be useless to change them to a 3:73? Would I notice that much of a gain, or would I just notice worse gas mileage?

I went from 2.73's to 3.73's in my stock 94 Z28 and it made world of a difference on the launches. On the gasmilage issue i can still get over 200 miles on a tank of fuel if i keep my foot out if it. Plus with Overdrive you'll do pretty good on the highway. Now in town I loose gasmilage with stop and go traffic plus i'm running a stall. If you did by a gear buy a motive 3.73 cause its one if not the quitests gears on the market. I have a richmond and it makes alittle noise but not enough to bother me.

i changed form 3.23 to 3.73 and it definately made a difference. i did lose some gas mileage, but it's worth it in my opinion.

What was your difference in the quarter? Also, what do you top out at and how does your transmission shift? Is it loud when your on the highway?

I went from 2.56s in my car to 3.73s. Made it feel 1000lbs lighter. Not sure of the gains in the 1/4 Mile. I think with 2.56s my top speed was like 225mph. Hhah no way my car could go that fast

I have 4.10 Gears in my 97 t/a with 6 spd and I love em. You will not be able to tell much a differance in gas milage if you drive it normal (like when the friendly neighorhood cop is driving next to you ).I only lost a little bit of top end and can still cruise on the interstate at around 2000 rpm going 70.Get the 4.10s or if you have an auto maybe 3.73s

I know what you feel like. I am still running the 2.59's out back and can't wait to drop in a set of 3.73's. I see no point in going over 150MPH on the highway.
