My bro's opti made his Z28 stutter at about 1800-2200 rpms.
A malfunction opti will usually cause some kind of misfire, or timing issue.
They are the center piece of the LT1's timing.
I've heard of all types of side effects from the opti, but make sure you eliminate all possible options, like the ignition module, wires, plugs, and have the PCM checked.
Then if all else fails, get the Vented MSD and go to town.

Well, the best sign I had was that my Z stopped in the middle of the freeway!
Actually when all THREE of my optis went out, I at least had some hesitation and a SES warning before they quit completely.
A bit of advice if you're going to replace your opti...do a search...I recommend a REAL AC/Delco replacement, unless you're really into doing things more than once or twice.

Well my car didn't throw any SES codes, it just started running like ***. The higher rpm you went the more it would miss. At idle you could hear it just slightly off, and then as the rpms would rise it would progressively get worse. Like fire coming out off the tailpipes worse.
I had just got my cutout on and was making some WOT runs from stop signs for my friends in the car, all of a sudden cough cough studder, then it started missing, no real warning for me, just **** out.

But to answer the question; my car started giving me problems anytime it went near water, rained, the humidity rose or someone sneezed on it. Half the time to get it to start at all I would half to put my foot to the floor and turn it over a bunch of times, then it stumbled usually at idle (enough where it sounded like I had a big cam) and smoke a lot. It would cutout for a sec without warning when driving. Here is a video of my cell (so quality kinda sucks) with stock manifolds dumped into only the 3in IM and out:

and when I replaced it this is what it looked like inside:

After looking at the guts, I don't even know how the damn thing started! It must be using that new technology that GM is developing with the Homogenius Charge Combustion engine where it doesn't use spark. My 1994 must have been GMs initial attempt at it!
