Default Valve springs too much??

I have a set of K-motion k-800 springs. They are rated as follows:

Number of Springs Per Valve: Dual
Outside Diameter of Outer Spring (in): 1.460 in.
Coil Bind Height (in): 1.085 in.
Damper Spring Included: No
Spring Rate (lbs/in): 471 lbs./in.
Inside Diameter of Outer Spring (in): 1.075 in.
Inside Diameter of Inner Spring (in): 0.782 in.
Valve Spring Style: Standard

My question is, are they rated too high for say a23x/23x hydro cam in a 383??

When I was researching springs these seemed to be perfect for the cam. However, with that much spring pressure, you'll need heavy duty lifters, most use morels. That's a lot of extra money to spend just to use those springs. If your max valve lift is under .590, use the comp 918 springs and hardware. If not, check out the comp dual springs, but I wouldn't know anything about those.

What's the installed height? What's the seat pressure? If installed at 1.8" they will have calculated seat pressure of 135 lb which is perfect for hydraulic roller cams. The open pressure would be a 415 lb with 0.6" lift, which is good.

Spring rate is too high, you want 300-340 open on a hydraulic roller.

alright, so what springs do you all suggest then? This is in the case that I keep the heads that are getting work done to them at the shop right now. They flowed 256/161 with stock size valves. If the new valve job opens them up enough I'll keep them. If not I'm getting the 190cc package from Advanced Induction. So in the latter I won't need to pick a spring or anything else. But lets say I DO keep the heads I have what spring should I go with. The cam is still undecided as well pending the results of the heads.

Like I said, the spring you choose should depend on the cam, not the other way around. You don't want to get a spring now that will limit your cam choice later. But, 918 beehives for <.580 lift and some dual spring for more than that.

You said your heads are at the shop, your machinist should be able to measure your installed height once the valve job is finished - should be around 1.780 +/- depending on retainer/locks. Then use a set of springs that will get you about 135-150# seat and 330# open with about .125" to coil bind. Comp 918's should work, Manley Nextek's will work, Isky 235D could work....or you can go double coil....either way this is a job for your machinist as he has the heads in front of him and can mock up the heads and calculate pressures for you with different spring choices.

You NEED to decide on the cam BEFORE the springs.....if you are using a generic 22x/22x with less than .550 lift then any of the springs mentioned will work.

ahh, okay thanks. I guess I'll just wait till the heads are done to pick the cam.

heads are done, bigger valves, worked over the seats a abit. New numbers

270/191 at .550 lift, and they keep climbing...
