Default buying a high mileage lt1=bad idea?

Well I am in a bit of a ditch now, I was hoping you guys could throw me down a rope and help me climb up. (Like that one don't you?)

Anyway, I am in the market for an older Lt1 f-body. I tried to go low mileage and I almost made it however the car sold on me.

There is a local selling his 94' Z28 w/ about 140k miles on the clock. Normally, I am pretty edgy about buying a car with high mileage. Now F-bodies, from my experience, do not age well, but from the pics, this car looks pretty damn good. It's spotless outside, it's a 6spd transmission and he has borla catback exhaust and some rims.

Here are pics of the car.

http://tucson.craigslist.org/car/240899203.html

Is he asking too much? 4950? I think I could talk him down to about 4k out the door possibly. I am not sure.

Let me know what you guys think?

How many have you risked buying a high mileage LT1, and how did it turn out for you?

my friend is selling a 97 z m6 with 90k on the clock, stone stock. car has fresh paint(he's a body man by trade and fresh paint makes him happy) for 4500. for a 3 yr older car with 50k more miles i think he's a little high.

mine has 140k on it now, I bought it with 124k on it for 5,000. I think i got a good deal, miles dont mean much if the car was maintained. I think My track times speak for how good the car runs for its age. I have never had a problem with the car unless i caused it by doing something else, like my long tube headers caused me my other problems i am fixing right now (oxygen sensors)
Some more pics of my car as an example of what i got for 5k http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2058034

i got my 94 z28 in october with 120k for 4G's and it runs mint. ive read in forums about guys who had 200k on their lt1's. its all about how well the car has been taken care of and what not. check the blue book on it, and dont go above that.

That is a Arizona car, it's clean, expecially if it's in a garage. I would talk him down to 4K, and get it.
Looks like it has Corvette Tips on that Exhaust..

Yea, I can spend $2K on an Engine re-build(just did), and I got Forged Pistons, Forged Rods, Racing Bearings, Balanced Rotating Assembly, LT4 Timing Set, Melling Oil Pump with Melling Drive Shaft, and a couple of other things, and have a pretty stout setup. Take $500 out of that for the 4-bolt main Corvette Block that I had to buy, my old one was a little crippled..

Looks pretty clean to me. I would go and look at it and drive it. If it drives as good as it looks might not be a bad deal.

The car looks pretty good to me. The price doesn't seem bad either. The only thing bad about 140K miles, is if it was abused the whole way there. The borla was probably for the sound and not much for the performance. So their could be a chance he didn't race too often. From the discription, he has kept up with maintenance and I'd say go for it.

he says he has owned it for about 7.5 years.

I have to admit for 140k miles the car looks pretty damn immaculate. It depends if he is an older guy, then he probably didn't drive it very hard. I know LT1s first hand, I actually have a friend that knows a bit about them so I will be sure to take him with me when I go and see it.

The 140k is a bit scary, the car has been on the market for awhile, so I think I can nab him for another 500 dollars and take the car from him for about 4400.

I just need a good strong car that will last me through the college years. If it is indeed the car of my choice, it WILL not be driven hard. I really only buy cars to have passing power, that's about it.

But from the actual ad, he looks like he has maintained everything. The new a/c unit is what intrigues me, because my car's a/c needs to be completely rebuilt/replaced by next summer. It barely made it through this year.

In Tucson, A/C is a very important thing. I am not very good at driving T56 based F-bodies though. The unsuspected heavy clutch always gets me off guard. I know how to drive a manual perfectly well. LT1s are pretty stout motors, and when modded right they are beastly.

At this car's age however, it probably won't be heavily modded. With baby care, I expect the engine and tranny to last me another 50k miles before it gives out or starts showing any signs of wear and tear.

I need a manual based F-body though. Yeah, I may suck at driving them, but it is so much fun to bang through the gears.

I wonder how bad insurance will be though....

Car looks nice IMO.

If worst comes to worst you can part it out and get your money back.

thats a nice car. Alot of older people buy these cars trying to make themselves feel young again and yet still drive them like old people that they are. A buddy of mine bought one a few weeks ago :94 M6 hardtop with 151,xxx miles. An older man bought it and took extremely good care of it even added some headers, exhaust and a CAI. The oil look better than mine and i change my oil every 3 months no matter how much i drive it(avg 50-100mi per) He only paid 3000 just b/c of the miles.
