Default Melling oil pump users may want to look at this

Better read this. I think on a normal application as long as it itsn't too crazy you will be fine. But on a high hp motor you may want to go to the select brand of melling. This is related to the m55 pumps most people use as stock replacements. I had ordered 2 and thankfully I saw that post before engine went in. Sure enough I measured the new style to the old m55 I had and there was a bid difference in the mounting flange. I reordered with a melling select 10550 which accepts our diameter pickup tube. Just though this would be good information for everyone to know and maybe avoid a potential problem. Just for safety I would upgrade to the select..its only about 25 bucks extra and you have peace of mind.

Thanks Tim! Won't help me since my pump is already in, so I guess I'll just hope for the best. I'm not using solid mounts and not pushing that much hp. Now I have another thing to worry about breaking besides the 10 bolt. Where do you get your pumps from? I got mine from Engine Parts Warehouse.

didn't mean to worry anyone. This is just a FYI thread. I don't know when the design changed so maybe some of you guys are ok. I know my old m55 had the larger housing but had other problems with it so it needed to be replaced. I think you are ok unless you are a high hp car and maybe then with solid motor mounts. Who knows. Dont make the mistake I did if anyone reorders and get the select pump that wants the 3/4 pickup tube. Make sure to get the 10550, not the 10555.

general motors asked them to make the casting thinner on the m55 series and who knows what other oil pumps
Sounds like it wasn't Melling's fault...

I read the entire post, the HV55 has the thicker mounting flange.

I have the HV55 and no problems in over 4 years. I see that the HV doesn't count here though... Just had to raise my hand too.

My old pump was a hv55. I had some kind of problem with it..not a casting but oil preasure was acting up so I got a new one. My old hv55 had the thick casting. I ordered the same part number as before and the new one had the thin casting and the warning labels to not use on high performance applications. I sent it back and got the select melling hv 10550 which had the same thick casting as my old hv55

what would you all consider a crazy set up? more than 400RWH or less? what I am asking is where is the line for power so I do not cross it, I was told the LT-1 I bought was 315HP at the fly, it was spose to have came outta a cop car, (intercepter package) and I put the Mellings M-55 oil pump in cause I bought one for the other engine I was building but this was a steal for price and I need to get this car on the road. I am planning to add some power but rembering how easy the 4L60E and the stock rear brake I will be gentle till I can replace those parts for alot better ones, besides I would be happy with a 500 RWHP car for the street, I am in So. Cal. so...

bump,

I've got the the new M55 pump so I want to replace it for the peace of mind. You guys are saying use the 10550 pump? But I don't want to use a HV pump because I heard they can suck the pan dry(stock CI). I'm not going to use solid motor mounts, but the engine is going to see 6000-6200rpms and 350-400rwhp.

What about sealed power oil pumps are they good?

Thanks
