Default What in the bottom end of the LT1 makes it not want to spin high?

Reason I'm asking is because I'm buying a shortblock for a pretty decent price, and I plan to do a budget 350-355. More than likely a 350 for cost alone, but I do want to improve on the LT1's factory form. I figure some new rod bearings and a splayed 4-bolt would be in order and wouldnt run me TO much, and also go a long way in keeping the motor alive. But top-end parts not withstanding, what in the bottom end should I look at upgrading to support 6500 RPMs that whatever head and cam package I choose would need and you guys would recommend? This will be a street car, and I dont need anything to serious at this time. The low-end and mid-range of the LT1 is perfect for me, but I want a reliable motor that can spin high enough to fully benifit a heads/cam package that will help give this ole' LT1 some top-end to scare those bolt-on LS1s.

A hydraulic roller cam is limited to 6500-7000 rpms depending on how the valve train is setup. If you were to step up to a solid roller you can go 8000 + rpms with good parts.

You won't get it past 7200 with the factory PCM. Mine has seen 9K a couple of times with a F.A.S.T. system. No mechanical reason an LT1 won't rev.

assuming you've got the proper cam, are they still making power at 7200+??

Off topic question real quick - how long will a rebuilt stock bottom end last spinning to 6700-6800? I'm just past 10k miles and was wondering how many miles I have left or does it just vary from engine to engine?

Sorry for the threadjack just read the title and made me think of the question.

Get you some good Bearings, and have it all Balanced. I have the Crank polished, Forged Rods and Forged Pistons with Teflon Skirts. It's all balancd, and it will run up to 6500 real quick.

yeah what ed and tony said.... nothing mechanical limits it..... lightweight rotating assy will help get it there quickly... properly spec'd out solid roller will help you get higher than 7....... but with the stock puter you ain't gonna see higher than 7200.....

my 236/242 hyd roller liked about 6600 and then she quit.... standard stud mounted comp cams RR's..... guideplates... standard stuff.. the new motor will be seeing more like 7800-8000 ish....

yeah your stock bottom end can take it.... don't know for how long but it'll take it if it's a properly maintained low to medium mileage LT1 (how many of those are left)

Well, I have a 115,000 mile 93 Z28, stock motor.
What do I need to be worried about first when getting on the gas?
I read the 93's had valve springs that were 1.45" as opposed to 1.25" for the later years....so I think I dont need to worry about them getting to lazy.....
Is that right?
