LT1 Backfire out of exhaust on shift
Hey everyone my friend has a 94 LT1 M6 Camaro. Everytime he shifts there is a slight backfire out of the exhaust?... why? what is causing this? He has an aftermarket Borla exhaust. Could it be the exhaust/tips itself? I was thinkin he wasn't firing all the way on compression stroke when #1 was on TDC.. but then it wouldn't even fire if it wasn't all the way on compression... I have no idea... any ideas?

backfire is common on these cars from what I have noticed. I didnt notice it on my car until I went from stock exhaust to corsa about a year ago. I wasnt too keen on the sound then, but I have gotten used to it. I wouldnt loose any sleep over it, unless it is just aweful.

It does it all the time. Maybe a timing issue? He is the 2nd owner of the car so maybe the 1st owner messed with the timing? But if its a common LT1 thing ill let him know. I was just wondering since i may purchase the car. But no the car isn't tuned. And about the running rich when stock.. could it be MAP Sensors?

Mine pops on just about every shift, cold or hot, also can hear it multiple pop or maybe it just sounds really raspy on deceleration, but I'm running a bullet muffler, probably has to do something with the audibility of it.
I can still remember how quiet the stock exhaust was, couldn't even really hear the car accelerate, let alone if something was going on.

If you have an exhaust leak that is letting cold air in when you let out it will cause it to backfire. Mine started that after I did some work on the pipes and didnt get one sealed up all the way. If i manually shift it and dont bring it up into 4th before i let out from cranking it up it will pop pretty loud.
