power programers?
As for the power tune; keep in mind you are applying a blind power enrichment setting that assumes premium fuel, a good running engine with no power adders already in place. A cam or headers will alter the air/fuel requirements enough to throw the blind tune from the hypertech into the wrong settings for that engine's different requirements.
People with bad experiences are those who fit the description above or simply have a problem with their car that may not be obvious to them. If your engine has a good deal of carbon build up you will have detonation and the hyper-tune will not work. If injectors or ignition are not operating at near perfect order you will find the hypertech has no advantage. One fella blames the HPP for ruining his PCM but his problem was a failing electrical system that caused a power outage during the time the new program was being uploaded.
If you have any issues at all with your engine or exhaust then the hand held can't adjust for that. If you added performance parts that make a significant different then the HPP will not be able to detect or adjust for these changes.
My experience with an $80 hpp was exceptional. Since I have the 160 degree thermostat the engine performance was noticeable. Adding the powertune with the 180 degree thermostat will add no power as the tune makes very conservative changes to timing and fuel to avoid detonation. All things being equal, the powertune works for some and not for others because the computer will compensate the moment it sees detonation or power lost to a fuel rich condition. Hypertech tested and developed the powertune parameters on a controlled base of cars, all running well with a 160 degree thermostat installed. Any departure from the cars they tested have given different results. The most important thing about the Hypertech is to thoroughly read the warnings on their website before investing. I have read a few success stories with the HPP but my message is too long as it is.
