Strange object found in LT1 oil pan
I was in the process of replacing the oil pan gasket of my LT1 V8, when I found this in the oil pan. I bought the engine last week at the junkyard to swap into my pickup. Everything looks good except for this mystery. I can’t think of where it came from.
The cylinder feels like charcoal, or some sort of hard foam. It is exactly 1" long by almost 3/4" in diameter. The inner hole is lined with a thin sheet of metal. The wheel rotates on the stalk, and is made of plastic. The stalk has sheared off of something. When I found this, the stalk was inserted into the cylinder, so they are probably from the same part.
Anyone know what the heck this is? (click image for full-size)
