Actually you can buy a well moded ls1 for around 10,000 on this board which i think is a heck of a deal for what you get. All the parts i bought for my lt1 cost just as much as my ls1. And sometimes cheaper on the ls1 and vise versa on the lt1. The lt1's downfall is the distributor I think.

You won't really be disappointed with either car. The only time I would say you might be disappointed is if you race an LS1 with a stock LT1. But then again, your not going to be keeping it stock, so...

yeah if you get a lt1 when you replace the distributor (its called an optispark) get a good one gm or msd cause if you get a cheap one you'll get to buy another soon. between 2 cars and 5 years i've went through 5. it would have been 4 if i hadnt been a stupid noob and bought a cheap replacement the first time i had one go out.

I don't want to sound like a jerk but it's actually called a distributor because thats what it is. Does anyone know who started calling it an optispark? I'm sure it was years ago but i was just curious. Sorry for the thread hijack.

well do the distributors go out alot on the lt1's? so what all does a LT1 have to have done to it for it to beat a cammed LS1 with a good tune?

tecnically its called an Opti-spark Distributor. most ppl just call it an optispark for short. and yes i agree that they are the downfall of the lt1 **** poor location directly below the waterpump which has a weep hole, brilliant.

LT1s typically need heads and cam or spray to beat a cammed (stock head) ls1.

It's an optispark distributor, there's nothing WRONG about calling it an opti.

No the optis aren't as bad as everyone makes them out to be,several people have gone 130k+ with the stockers, every car is different.

To beat a cammed LS1? Depends on the cam and supporting mods. Thats not an easy question. Just know that it can, it just takes a bigger cam or more mods.

my first z28 had one replaced around 90k that one (cheapo) went out at 96k the delco that replaced it was still on the car when i smashed it at 140k. and i just replaced the one on my 96 which had 120k on it. to beat a cammed ls1 theres alot you can do. heads and a cam def would beat an ls1. i'd personally go with headers and exhaust and some gears. start in the rearend and work forward keeping the big picture in mind. i had a friend built his engine blew the tranny built the tranny blew the rearend. most daily driver cars are given hell regularly so whoever your racing will more than likley have bald tires and are gonna spin. KEEP MEAT ON YOUR TIRES theres no point in having more hp than traction cause while they are spinning in one spot you'll be showing them your bumper.

man its hard for me to make up my mind which one i want to go with, the LT1 or the LS1 because i see some replies make it seem like the lt1 dont have a chance but then i see the lt1 can be modded to stay with or beat an ls1 but it seems like you have to do twice as much for the lt1.

Mickey Thompson ET street radials are your friend.

And go to gmpartsdirect.com it says nothing about optispark. Also if you buy a gm there parts list says nothing about "optispark" I believe.

go on looks motor vs motor theyre very close add a cam to an LT, LT>LS cam both LT<LS cam and heads LT, LT>LS cam and heads LT and LS, LT<LS. different setups are gonna make different #s on each car but if you do the same mods to both cars theres always gonna be that little bit extra that the LS has over the LT the only way is to go with a more aggressive setup than the car your racing.

I don't know how/why you guys kill so many opti's. I haven't killed one. I replaced my factory one for no reason because I had my motor out. But it was still kicking strong at 96k.

The boost would have to be pretty limited due to the high compression and cast pistons.

BTW, what part of Louisiana are you from? I was born and raised in North East La.
