this subject has been beet to death! LS1 is by far a more superior motor, no ifs, ands, or buts..... however they are more expensive to mod. if i could do it all over again, i would go ls1.

Highly recommend a search on this thread for this section, it's been covered in painful detail over and over and is one of the most hated new threads on any forums.

i have a 96 SS with a LT1 and the only mods i have are headers and 3" exhaust i have pretty sticky tires for street tires bfg kdws 275/40. my buddys both have LS1 cars (02 z28 and an 01 trans am)and i absolutley murder them off the line i put 3 car lengths on the z28 and 5 on the TA in about an 1/8. from a 30 kick the z got 1/2 a car on me up to 90. I'm very happy with the way my slightly modded car performs against my friends cars and all together i've only got about $7000 in my car where as my buddies spent $13000 on his z and $13500 on the TA. I've driven both LT1s and LS1s I've owned 2 LTs and as far as both cars go they both drive great and either motor is gonna haul *** if you upgrade to a turbo or heads and cam. So I would choose based on which body style you like the most the 93-97 or the 98-02. examine the years closley to determine which features you want. for example the 93,94 and i think the 95 models have OBD1 and the 96-97 have OBD2 dont quote me on the 95s having OBD1. and the 98-00 cars have ls1 intakes where as the 01-02 cars have the ls6 intake. A LT1 car is going to be considerably cheaper and leave more cash in your wallet for mods, but it will be easier to find a lower mileage ls1.

Man I love this debate.

Bottom line. Superior is not the word. The only hp gain exception is the heads. Talk to someone that has a custom set of 18* LT1 heads on their LT1 and you will see the LS1 get knocked down severely. Port design helps the LS1 a little bit but the 18* vs. the 23* is where the hp difference is.

This brings us to perhaps the most innovative part of the new small-block: the cylinder heads. GM engineer Ron Sperry was responsible for the cylinder head airflow development on the Gen III, and he really went for it. All production small-blocks have stuck with the original 23-degree valve angle since the first 265 was dropped into a ’55 Chevy. Sperry raised this to 15 degrees, which is an even more vertical angle than the current 18-degree NASCAR cylinder head and eight degrees more than the previous small-block’s 23-degree valve angle. This also creates a more shallow combustion chamber.

But of even greater interest is the extremely tall and narrow intake ports. Compared to the previous stock small-block production ports that measuring roughly 1.25 inches wide by 2.00 inches tall, the new LS1 intake port is extremely tall yet narrow, measuring 1.062 inches wide by 3.25 inches tall. The triangulated top of the port is designed to give the upstream fuel injector a straighter shot at the intake valve.

There will certainly be a fair amount of controversy over this port design, but it could also offer benefits when it comes to turning the corner at the valve. The valve sizes are 2.00/1.55 inches for the intake and exhaust, with a flat 67.5cc chamber volume. Combined with the flat-top piston, this gives the LS1 a 10.1:1 static compression ratio. The exhaust ports are more conventional in design, although they have been raised slightly more than an LT1 head.

Another guy with plans to buy one of these and put a heads/cam and turbo on it? How many people who start threads like this actually end up with these combinations?

if you like being the under dog and beating people (like me) get an LT1. although if you got lots $$$ and want to go the fastest you can absolutely go get an LS1. both are very fast. fastest LT1 i know of run 8.08 in the 1/4. but there are faster LS1's (i think).

This is the most intelligent post yet. I say choose what body style you like the best and make sure its been taken care of. You can always throw a LS1 in a LT1 body. But I wouldnt mod the body of any car unless its changing the hood .

Agreed . Find the body you like, and buy it. both have plenty of potential.
I personally like the way the LT1 camaro's look over the ls1's. so... i have an LT1 camaro, and love it!
