Default My LT1 is an LS1 killer?

So I sold my 383 Z28 and bought a stock 96 SS, to get good gas mileage in, take care of, have some value, etc.

Well a buddy of mine has a 99 TA, WS6 that he thinks is super fast and will beat anything. After owning him in my 383 Z, my buddies H/C LS1 owning him, I thought he was down for the count. Well a new slew of stock cars in our circle of friends came out, 2 A4 97 Z28s and my 96 M6 SS. After he had owned both of the A4s it was obvioiusly my turn.

All day I hear "your car is slow TAs own" and blah blah. I don't really care, I sold my fast car to get good gas mileage and have a reliable DD. Finally got sick of it and decide to act upon it tonight.

1st race-
We go out to a deserted spot, paved, smooth, and flat. I am completly expecting to get killed so I don't do a burnout (save the tires, they're new!) He does a burnout and it is on my 3rd honk we are gonna go. Beeeep ... Beeep -TA takes off. I take off to play catchup, spin a lot and end up about 2 cars down off the line. 1st and 2nd this doesn't change at all. I hit 3rd and wtf? I started catching up. By 4th gear my hood was sucking in his quarter panel. I let off after that and gave myself about a half mile to slow down.
I was obviously in shock and he pulls up beside me and says "lets run again, somewhere else. I followed him out to another spot for race number 2

2nd race-
I did a little burnout this time thinking, "stock LT1 with nice tires, a 200lb system over the rear end, and another 50lbs of parts in the back seat shouldn't need a lot." 3rd honk and we both actually launch at the same time. Same result, me spinning and he jumped about a car. 2nd gear we were side by side, and by 3rd gear i had gained on him. In 4th I had pulled about a car and a half and held it with no loss or gain.

Is my car a freak? Both cars are BONE STOCK. Paper filter even, stock lid (on the LS1), stock exhaust, factory cats, etc. Also today I felt a slight miss before we raced, and I noticed during the race it would start to BARELY miss right around 5k. Plugs probably.

I'm not sure what to think now, I'm just happy that both of my cars have shut him up. No more hurting the SS, I really need to find another car to tear up. We'll be running at the track the 13th, weather permitting, so I will have times for both of us. Hopefully there I will be able to kill some of my traction issues.

Well I didn't expect that outcome. I know that some SS's had the LT4 instead of the LT1 so that would put it about like that maybe. But I don't know if any 96's had the LT4, I thought you could only find them in some 97's. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. And also, is his an auto or 6speed?

Sounds like the TA has a problem. When I had my LT1 A4 at about the middle of 2nd LS1's would kick my ***.

PS. a 5K miss in an LT1=opti normally

I was waiting for him to hit 2nd gear and kill me. And if not 2nd, at LEAST 3rd where the LS1s pull hard.

His is an auto. I believe LT4s only came in a FEW 97s.

Figure it's either Opti or plugs, going to hope it's plugs for right now

I will have time slips the 13/14.

Yeah that's what I thought, but I wasn't really too sure because I knew that some SS's the 96-97 style had them. But where I've seen 1/4 mile times on the net a 96 SS should be only a couple tenths slower than an auto LS1 making it a drivers race.

I haven't driven a manual for about 3 years and I'm 2 weeks in to this car. I wouldn't call myself great at it, especially not at launching it.

I saw a guy with a stock 97 SS running 13.89s at the track. I was excited to be in the 13s stock. I want to see a 13.6 out of the car.

I came back from a car down and won by over a car, there is no mistaking it that my car is faster. Stock LT1 SS > Stock 99 WS6? My car a freak, his car is weak?

Are you completely sure your car's stock? Maybe the last owner put some lower gears in it or something that isn't noticable at a simple glance or anything.

Ya, gearing could be the issue here.

I'm thinking the LS1 is maybe in need of a tune up or something, but good runs nonetheless

This should not have happened. I am not doubting you one bit, but I am saying there are other factors at play here. An auto LT1 will make 260whp at the most and an auto LS1 275 at the least. This is assuming freak good LT1 and freak slow LS1. They weigh the same and he still should have you on the big end. Something is not as it seems.

Scanned my car today, cyl 5 is showing 720 misses in the last week since I checked it last. Can't be too severe, because 720 misses is like nothing.

I am 100% sure the car is stock, other than !CAGS and lowering. My boss did all of the work on the car. Still has manifolds, cats, 2otl, everything.

Only thing you're missing is this is M6 BLKWS.6. Not a big difference, but I won for sure. Maybe we'll do it again tonight and video it, but I definatly was ahead of him after a spinning start. He is not excited about losing, but he WILL admit I won.

Go from a like a 40mph roll...a true test of engine vs engine. It takes out the driver error factor.

Not a bad idea, I'm not sure what MPH I run out of gear at but about a 3k roll in 1st gear and I guarantee I can take him.

I'm pretty sure the LT4 was only put in 100 '97 model SS cars. As mentioned this "shouldn't" have happened but on the street anything can happen. I used to own an LT1 car too and I would've thought the T/A would pull you in 2nd and 3rd. The fact that you made up the difference and put a car or more on him means you're putting down more power (at least it seems that way). Oh and BTW, good kill!

I can assure you that hsi car runs just fine, I have seen him walk a couple LT1 Zs like nothing with passengers. There was me, him, and 2 others in his car and we walked a 97 Z with 1 passenger, both auto.

The fact that I came up from a car back means I definatly didn't have the advantage off the launch, etc.

5_02ls1 - You calling shens? Cause you can GTFO if you're not going to believe me. I'd see no shame in claiming I lost to a stock LS1, afterall that is what "should happen." I posted this to see if others have had this experience, because I've never seen a stock LT1 beat a stock LS1 and it really shouldn't happen.

He raced him, he won, good kill and be proud!
