What does it take to convert an A4 to an M6? What kinda value hurt would this be on a SS? Would anyone trade a rebuilt ACE StageII for a rebuilt M6? Could all this be done for uner 1500?

you will need the 6 speed from a lt1 (borg warner T-56), flywheel, brake and clutch pedals, center console, slave and master cylinder. I am sure i am missing something. You will also have to drill a few holes in the firewall...

I don't think it would change the value much at all.

o yeah, the car needs to have at least a 3.42 final gear ratio or you will have some bogging troubles...

I had this done on my 93 T/A, it's the best mod I did to my car. However, it is pretty expensive.

I swapped my car and would definately do it again. It was easier for me though in a few ways because I didn't have an engine in the car so I went ahead and got a 6 speed harness and ecu. I helped a buddy swap his ls1 car and he kept the stock a4 harness but he bought a few GM weather pack connectors for his swap. It went almost as smoothly as my swap did. Heres a few tips for you..

1. Make sure you have a jig saw. We did both our swaps using a sawsall to cut the hole in the floor with and neither one really turned out all that great. a jig saw would work MUCH better.

2. When you go to drop the auto, DO NOT cut the stock tranny cooler lines. Work around them. We cut my buddies and it leaked fluid EVERYWHERE. We didn't think there would be THAT much fluid in it...

3. Go to sears and get yourself an easy out kit. We bought the cheap kit the first time and it didn't help at all. There is a kit thats around $55-60 that works great for the torque converter to flex plate bolts. On his ls1 car, they were for some reason allen bolts so of course they stripped right out. But the flex plate to crank bolts on my lt1 were a PITA to get off without stripping them. The easy out kit would have made short work of them.

4. When you go to put the clutch hydraulics on the firewall, don't reause the stock u bolt. I replaced mine with a pair of grade 8 bolts with flanged nuts and it was VERY easy to install. The u bolt looked like it was going to be hard to put in.

5. Do not attempt this swap without a transmission jack. We had one and barely had to strain ourselves at all.

6. Make sure that you put the torque arm bolts into the transmission before you jack it up into place. You can't get to the top bolt very easily and its borderline impossible.

7. Buy some transmission fluid before you do the swap. I put mine in and test drove it and then changed the fluid. Just simple and cheap insurance to make sure its got proper lubrication and theres nothing in it.

All in all the swap wasn't bad. I have about $1500 in mine. I got the t56 and all its parts for $1000. Then discovered the bellhousing had a crack in it so had to buy another one for $100 from a local guy. Then I needed a stock flywheel ($50 after resurfacing) and because of future mods I got a spec stg 3 clutch kit for a little over $500. I would definately do the swap again.

On mine we used the entire m6 harness. On my buddies' car we used his stock a4 harness and did the appropriate mods to make things work. The harness is all one piece so you can't swap out sections without MAJOR rewiring and with as few mods as you need to do, swapping it out doesn't make sense. Just do some research and figure out which connectors you need, then go get them from GM. It will be kinda pricey doing it that way, but it would be done correctly.

It'll take quite a bit of labor and roughly $2k.

No possible way. I could do it in a weekend now and could do it for less than 2k easily. It shouldn't be a problem to get all the parts for around a grand in good working condition minus a clutch and small misc. things.

well my ad just bought a 97 SS A4 and i suggested doing an M6 swap after we rebuild the motor. It'll be his project so i'll let him do it lol, he has a lot more experience, i was told we could use the regular wiring harness, and then send the ecm, to MADz28 and he should be able to do the tuning just fine. All suggestions are welcome, pictures would be great too.

For a conversion that includes everything (and good working parts, not crap that needs rebuiliding), you'll spend between $1200 and $1800, if not more. I agree it can be done in a weekend, if you know what you are doing it is pretty easy. I'm sure you will run into some issues where you'll need small misc. parts etc... so theres maybe $100 or 200, if you're lucky. So way possible.

ou don
Let me rephrase what I said earlier. It IS possible if you don't shop around for better prices. I got my swap complete minus the bellhousing (he found it cracked after he pulled it off), the clutch and flywheel (he offered a spec stg 6 and aftermarket flywheel for another 600 I believe but I didn't want either) all for $1000. Transmission had just had a rebuild 20,000 miles before that. My kit even came with a pro 5.0 and a lou's short stick shifter.

One of the best possible mods I could have done. I Purchased my whole kit including consol for $1200. I used the stock stock clutch/pp and shifter until I was able to upgrade both. I still have the stock 3.23's in back and to be honest its not that bad. At 65mph in 6th im only at 1500 rpm range and I get at least 27-30mpg on the highway. So far at the track my best times with thiscombo is 13.33's@107. Im sure I would be int he 12's with a gear swap.
