Default I blew up my spider gears in my stock posi unit...

so yeah... this is what i found after i took my rear apart

I heard a loud banging out of my rear as i drove around a parking lot, i was like wow wtf... and it progressively got worse around corners. Then I went to make a left at one light and it just went nuts... the rear was banging like crazy. So I drove to my buddies house, and I managed to get there by putting the clutch in around turns. It made no noise at all, it was very wierd.

anyway, i got it all apart, and this is what I found.

So I called summit and i said yeah i have a 96 trans am, stock 10bolt 7.5" rear with a POSI. IDK how many times i said posi, but i asked and made sure it was for a posi, because on their site all i could find was the spider gears for a poo poo (open) diff. The guy assured me they were the right ones and I got them overnighted.

Sure enough, when they got to my house, WRONG ONES. they are smaller and the spiders that spline into the axle are COMPLETELY different. So i make more phone calls, and jegs tells me that no one makes the spider gears for a posi, and i would have to get a whole new carrier through GM ($800 lololol).

After some research, i found a set of spider gears for a posi
http://www.yukongear.com/ProductDetails.aspx?ProdID=968
yukongear makes it. and i priced it out, ~$210 friggen dollars for the set of just those gears... so i said EFF that!

My friend pointed me in this direction.

Detroit Locker, TrueTrac... for my crappy 10bolt

only $375... not bad. no more clutches or springs, just straight gears. and I might say, it seems to bite harder when i get on it after a turn. might just be me.

So just some info if u guys ever have to rebuild your crappy 10bolt posi gears. Just go with a locker or if u have the money... 9"

You are just wasting money and buying time on that 10 bolt. Put your money into something that will hold up. Get a 9inch or even a 12 bolt and be done with it.

I hear good things about Eaton posi units, just in general though, not specific to f-body rear ends.

Damn man, I just broke my rearend Saturday. I broke my spider gears as well. I was looking into getting another carrier and found a guy who has a rearend with 4.10's so I may just go that route! Glad you got it straightened out. I'm getting my 12 bolt or 9 inch this winter and was thinking of going with 3.73's but I guess if I get this rearend with 4.10's That will make me decide whether or not to stay with 3.42's, or go to 3.73's or 4.10's after I run the 4.10's for a while!

Thanks for the info you posted as well. I'm sure that would be helpful for someone!

Yeah I know how that feels, I broke my last 10 bolt in my Iroc with a 355 in it and I was about 30 minutes away from my shop.... I ended up hauling *** to the shop and yanked it out and put in another 1.

The 1 in my Formula I had broken while beating a supercharged Notchback Stang that kept talking mad **** all night about how he'd get his s/c stang and whoop my cars ***. I told him I am a stock lt1 with exhaust, gears, and CAI, and Some Suspension and that I hoped his s/c Stang would kick my cars *** in a race. Never-the-less he finally went back to his shop and pulled it out and we raced about 6 times, all of which my girl was driving and I was shifting the Automatic for her and she walked him good everytime. His excuse was he broke a s/c belt but I told him I heard it whinning and he didn't say anything. He just turned off after the last race.
I guess I won and Lost at the same time huh!
Bad thing was I was only on Nitto's on the Street!
