from what I have read and heard one of the only things that shortys are better at is passing visual inspection for emisions because they keep the cats very close to stock location. other than that longtubes seem to be the ticket. they support more hp and seem to be more readily availible used. alot of this will probably be corrected by another member but this is what I have heard or read

Longtubes move the powerband up in the RPM Range, and you can get more RPM's out of it. Combined with a Cam they are nice. Shorties will help the torque down-low, but still be restrictive.

Think about it..would you rather be short and get a little ooo-aaah out of it, or be long, putting it all out getting the full OMG..

the statement can be taken a few different ways!
longtubes are better if you are looking for higher rpm power.
shorties and mids seem to make a bit more TQ at a lower RPM range so depending on what you are doing with your car that will determine which style of hedder is best for you! there are a few people with shorties and mids that are running with the longtube crowd.....

o **** they found out damn. but to do with the original poster said I have a set of pacesetter longubes without emissions provisions I deleted my cat and I must say it changed the sound and feeling of my car in a good way plus not to mention it gives me two nice places for cut outs if I dont end up selling my car.

something tells me the thread op did not want to learn anything... just wanted to win a pissing contest with his friend.... But yes long tubes are better. Beyond the number differences that did not need to be quoted by those who gave you the easy versions and explanations.

shorties are for people who just want "headers". long tubes are for people who want headers that do their job.

I think the shorty headers are just warm over the stock manifold, it just looks better. If you're swapping headers, for more power, do it once and get the long tubes.

If you live where you must pass a visual inspection only certain shortie headers are CARB certified. Some states/station won't pass headers without the CARB # plate on them. There are no CARB cert. Longtubes for LT1 cars.
That said, most inspection stations don't go that far to look? I think SLP and Edelbrock are CARb certified.

Also don't forget shorties typically usea stock type Y-pipe so you retain the normal ground clearance. the Y-pipe isn't that mucch larger then the stock unit and probably cost some of the HP differences as well.

With long tubes the header collectors extend down under the car reducing ground clearance. If your car is lower long tubes have that disadvantage as well.

On a stock/near stock engine, Good quality shorties ( I feel MAC and SLP are good ) normally can see a 20 to maybe 25HP gain, Longtubes like Pacesetter, Jethot, hooker will nornally see 30+ gains. Some of the newer LTs out have larger diam tubes and can support high HP if the engine has internal mods.

If you're looking to get the most out of your car, then long tubes. If you're looking to add a few HP and still stay leagal then shorties.

MAC shorties produce results
on my bolton car I gained nothing from MAC to hooker longs (a little mph maybe)

The problem with all available shorties for our cars is primary, collector and y-pipe design and diameter. If all was equal between the two the shorties would actually give more power up top, whereas the longtubes would have wipec the floor with the shorties in the mid range areas and useable torque.

But we all know the shorties available are all poorly designed from a all out power standpoint.

shortys show minimal to no gains, while longtubes no matter the brand will show gains, some even up to around 30hp.

The NUMBER ONE Reason Long tubes are beter then Sharty's ios every one THINKS they are cooler.

other then that I only saw a max of five HP differeance at 400RWHP.

Watse of timew and money and 2in inches less of ground clearance over my old SLP shortys

The rest is full on bull ****
